WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The following business of interest was transacted at the usual meeting of tho Waste Lands Board : Warden Simpson reported on a letter from Mr. J. A. Miller, secretary to the Arrow River Miners’ Association, as to persons holding agricultural leases. Messrs Hallenstein and Witter requested the Board to cancel their licenses for Runs 1 and 7, Wakatip district, as from the Ist April next, the rents payable on these runs being excessive. Mr Strode considered that tho matter Was beyond their power. The Board agreed to grant tho request, subject to the approval of Government, on condition of payment of arrears of rent to Ist April next. A communication was read from Mr D. F. Main in reference to a petition of settlers at Hyde, requesting that 2000 acres of land be declared open for settlement upon deferred payment. Ho stated that the signatures were nearly all in the same handwriting, and had been obtained by a paid canvasser. Consideration of the matter deferred, pending further inquiry. The following letter was received from ’Messrs Cargill and Anderson : “ In reference to tho survey of an additional 50C acres on Run 369, besides the quantity mentioned in the Hon. Donald Reid’s memo, of laud which, up to that date, had been taken by the Provincial Government from that Run, and which matter we brought before the Waste Lands Board on a former occasion, when we were informed that the 509 acres in question had been dealt with by proclamation in the Otago Provincial Gazette of 12th May, 1875, we have now the honor to state that, as we are advised, the proclamation so dealing with the land is illegal, and that we are entitled to the depasturage of the 500 acres during the term of our lease as though no such proclamation had been made, and that such proclamation conveys no right to the Municipality of Roxburgh, In these circumstances we would respectfully suggest that the Board should got a legal opinion on the matter.” The Board resolved to comply with the request, and get a legal opinion on the matter. Warden Robinson transmitted a plan of a water-race, applied for by F. G. Dalgety on November 17, 1875, for approval.—Approved. The District Land Officer, Nnseby, reported with reference to a block of GOO acres on Run No. 22G, offered to be open for sale by Messrs Handyside and Roberts without receiving compensation tor same. It was resolved that the land he put up at auction in three sections of 200 acres each.
