CLYDE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

First Day’s Sports—December 26, 1876. The Fifth Annual Gathering of the above Society took place on the Clyde Recreation Grounds on the above date. The whole of the Stewards and office hearers were present during the day, Viz. , Messrs D. M'Pherson, G. Pache, J. Holt, C. Attfield, T. H. Bell, T. Hawthorne, C. P. Beck, J. Parkes, Wm. Fames, J. Cox, S. Welsford. B. Naylor (Mayor and Treasurer), and D. M'Connochle (Secretary). The day was charming, which induced a goodly number to assemble on the grounds to witness the various events, which were keenly competed forin fact, through the good judgment of the Handicappers (Messrs Attfield and Holt) every prize throughout the meeting required winning. One of the loading events of the day was the 150 yards’ race, which brought eleven fine strapping young fellows to the post, when a youth—who was called the “ Balmoral Pet ’’—with plenty ot pure Highland blood in his veins, and full of running, lead the team a merry ‘dfence throughout, winning by fou>- yards. The next event worthy of a few remarks was the great half-mile burdie race, when eight faced the starter—except to a few of the knowing ones this race must have been considered a “ boil-Over " William Wells—“ The Dunstan Buck"—was, comparatively speaking, up to this season a “maiden ” on the turf, but he went away with a fine dash, and was never caught, winning by several yards. This fine young fellow shows plenty of running points, and by keeping the sponge at work, and other training etcetras his name will be heard of in future. In our opinion, however, the best contested event Was the running high jump which was very evenly contested, the winner bring G. Dunbar, with S. Dewar an excellent second. Very great credit is due to Mr Holt fof the large and commodious booth, also th “'i awnings at each end of it, which he erectefjj at considerable expence, for the comfort anff convenience of visitors to the grounds. 1.
