Cromwell, —o - This match —the opening one of tho season, and the result of a challenge by the Clyde team—took place on the Cromwell ground on Thursday, the 9th instant, tho anniversary of the Prince of Wales’ birthday, and resulted, as per scores below, in an easy victory for the Clydeites, the Cromwellians scoring only a total of 49 in the two innings, while their opponents made the same number in one. 1 was going to say luck was all on the side of the winners, but must, however, correct myself, as their team was undoubtedly the stronger in all points, and without any nncharitableness I would advise the Cromwell Captain before he a.ain meets his old foe to strengthen hi?. There was a noticeable improvement in the bowling of both teams. Sams and Wiliams especially were good, and with steady practice would be an acquisition to anv eleven. Both are round arm bowlers, of medium pace, and pretty straight on tho wickets, and difficult to make scores off. The game (it, considering the interruption by the by the Cromwell Rifle Corps, who come on the ground and fired of! a feu, dejoit) only lasted about two hours, and which, it may fairly he assumed, was fast and furious. The weather was exactly suitable for an out-of-dnors game, and what ; . with the presence of tho ladies who mustered in good force, and a 'air crowd of male visitors who look np a position round and about tho pavilion, the Cromwell Cricket Ground presented quitean attractive appearance, everyone apparently enjoying themselves. Tho refreshments were under the charge of Mrs Heron, who apparently gave satisfaction. The scores are appended. Cromwell. —First Innings.
