ARROWTOWN.
(FROM our own correspondent.) Things are beginning to got pretty lively .‘at tho Macetown reefs just now, —five companics are now pushing on operations, and era many days some'two or three more will be added to that number. The want of uiacliineryis, however, the great drawback ; but this is a work lhat requires time, and in the absence of roads it is perfectly im■possihle at present. The Homeward Bound, All Nations, and Maryborough companies are upon excellent stone, that of the All Nations being something out ot the common, tho last twenty feet of their tunnel towards fie Maryborough boundary has turned but s’ono that has had no equal i i Otago, and 1 question if there has been any better' ever obtained in New Zealand. I think we may t ike it as an acceptable fact that the Maoetown reefs will prove one of tho best discoveries ever made in New Zealand. We have had a bit of a strike here, but with only two exceptions 'the men have turned to again. The occasion of the rumpus hero was nota reduction of wages but an attempt to obtain an increase. Three pounds per week was. the rate here before, but some miners ' coming from Cromwell, who had been on tWstrike there, wanted a j 'rise of ten shillings, which was very'properly' refused. I think, Tibwevor, that the difficulty is settled, and that three pounds per week, which for constant work is really ‘ a high rate of wages, will be generally'accepted. Our Municipal Council are making a move in the matter of securing a water supply to the town, and it is high time they did something in this respect. Arrowtown possesses every facility for being abundantly ' and p“rmanently supplied with tHo‘purest of water, but we' fail to possess a Council of sufficient capacity to carry out or even invent a practical scheme to give effect to so desirable and necessary a measure.
