Thursday, October 26, 1376. (Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R. M.) Wm. White was charged with stealing a pair of moleskin trousers from the waggon of Thomas Taylor, the value of 14s. The evidence of Taylor and of the arresting constable Sergeant M'Oann being conclusive the prisoner was found guilty.—Sentence deferred. The same prisoner was charged with stealing a meerschaum pipe, the value of 30s, from the pocket of one James Watson. Found guilty.—Sentence deferred. The same prisoner was further charged with stealing a meerschaum pipe, the value of 15s, from the waggon of one James Sims. The Police said in this case they would have to apply for s remand so as to obtain the evidence of a material witness. The Bench said that as the prisoner w:..) found guilty'on the two previous charges, and as it would seriouslv inconvenience both the prosecutor and the witnesses to draw them specially to Clyde, perhaps from another part of the Province, and as the sentences he intended to pass would be full punishment for the offences committed, he would agree to the 'proposition and let the case be withdrawn. Then addressing the prisoner, the Magistrate said the sentence of the Court would be, one Month's imprisonment with hard labor in Clyde Gaol, for. each offence.
