The Dunstan Times.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1876.
Ihenea'h the rule of men entirely just the PEN is MIGHTIER than the SWORD.
It is greatly to be desired that the Counties’ Bill, in -whatever shape it may take, will he quickly passed as very serious injury is being done to the Colony by the uncertainty of this measure. Should it turn nut that the Dnnstan 1 lectoral It sic , t-gatler with the country ab. ve Cromwell will be constituted one County, we think people should be satisfied with the division —the two districts mav be said to have, almost, interests in common, and their amalgamation largely benefit the inhabitants of both. We suppose the boundary to the Southward of the Wakatip will he Kingston at the foot of the Lake, and which will form a good natural one, all the country from that to Invercargill being atlached in one County, with railway communication through the whole, should at least satisfy nnv Southland friends, and not displease those at Queenstown ; as, however, things may go now, it is hopeless for the City of the 1 akes to become the County Town.it must now remain content to realize the fond anticipations of Mr Henry Handers. M.H.fl. of being the favorite watering plrc' for the Northern go'd fields. Still, disappointed as the Queenstown people will be in the matter of tin ir pleasant little township not being the chief centre of business for the County, with railway communication completed as far as Kingston, and the existence of a good road and free bridges between Queenstown and Cicmwell, our relations will doubtless be more closely intimate than ever, as that route to Dunedin will, in the matter of goods traffic be oftentimes availed of when carriage is high on the Tuapeka and Pigroot lines of road, while as a pleasant route for tourists and visitors desiring to see the country, nothing could be more charming As to Arrowtown we think that modest little town has no chance whatever. The battle for the County Town will cloubtle-s be between Clyde and Cromwell, both of which have their special claims for this distinction In the case of Clyde we have much to urge—it occupies a very central position, commandingthe entire Electoral District of the Dunstan ; the situation is healthy, it is f>-ce from the annoyance of dust storms, while the public buildings, without, any very greit outlay, are admirably adapted for carrying on the business of the County Council. Cromwell has claim- 5 , and we must not ignore them ; one of these is that it, is nearer to the Wakatip, and representatives from there mav naturally object to travel further, still, they may have a verv strong objection to the inconveniences of the dust, with the pos-ibility of a touch of typhoid looming in the dis tar.ee, and this should be sufficient to spur the Corporation of Cromwell into action to remove the ills herein complained of by using exertions to make their town a pleasant one, and we should imagine with their fine water supply that this might easily be effected. Whichever, place may be selected as the County Town we hope that tlie, best interests and conveniences of the Countv will be best, served, and that however things may go and in terests c’ash. the rivalry between contending parties will be a generous one.
