Can any philosopher explain to ns why it ia that brokers and others who deal in notes, mortgages, etc., consider these articles of merchandise valueless when they are cancelled ? What we want to know is, why it ia they cannot sell when they can-cel ?
A Gorman professor, while lecturing on momentum to the junior class, not long since, related, in illustration of his subject, an account of an explosion of gunpowder in one of the army trains during tho late war, on which occasion, he said, the homes were blown off their shoes. “But this,” ho added, “ was an extreme case.” The class thought so too. Children arc inquisitive bodies ; for instance : “What does cleave mean, pa?" “It means to unite together.” “ Does John unite wood when ho cleaves it?” “Hem! well, it moans to separate.” “ Well, docs a man separate from his wife when ho cleaves to her?" “Hera, hem! don’t ask so many foolish questions, child.”
