ALEXANDRA.

(Contributed.) On Saturday evening last a public meeting, convened by the Mayor, was held in the Library Hall, Alexandra, to receive the report of a Committee appointed at a former meeting to consider the question of cost, &c., of prospseting the deep ground in the neighborhood of Alexandra. Mr Samson, Mayor of Alexandra, occupied the Chair. The Committee, through several of their number, explained that they had seselected a site for intended operations ; viz. —on the banks of the river immediately above the town. That they had been promised a good supply of water from' the Manuherikia Water Race Company- The other necessary tools they had not been enabled to as yet arranged for ; they however, ascertained cost of Californian pumps. This description of pump was considered unwieldy, and would suggest the procuring of a centrifugal pump. Ways and means they had not taken into consideration; they were led to believe that if a working plant was put on the ground a party of men could be got who would test the ground on terms. The chairman thought the question of means should be gone into ; others thought that the cost of plant should be ascertained first, and at that the matter dropped. Mr Chappie thought the Manorburn Flat presented a far better field for prospecting than did the banks of the river, and suggested that the Government be asked to assist in the construction of a large tail race through the flat. After some further desultory talk the meeting separated. In the Warden’s Court on Monday last, beyond the receiving of Land Revenue, and the dealing with some Mining Applications, there was no business transacted.

In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, the following cases were disposed of—James Hazlett (as purchaser of the Estate of Jas. Rivers) v. Chappie. Claim Ll3 10s 2d, goods supplied. Mr Wilson for plaintiff; defendant (who pleaded his own cause) filed and pled a set-off of L 3 Bs., for chaff and bags, which was disputed. Defendant not having witnesses to prove his set-off, the case, on his application was adjourned till next Court-day, he paying costs of Court and professional costs. Chappie v. Hazlett, (as purchaser of the Estate of Jas. Rivera) Claim L 33 Cs, L3O, damages, being at the rate of LI per day for a stack of oats purchased by Mr Rivers from one Mr Kemble, being allowed to remain on plaintiff's farm after notice to remove it, and L 3 6s, for Auctioneers commission. The latte' - item was paid into Court. Plaintiff conducted his own case ; Mr Wilson oppeared for the defendant. From the evidence adduced, it appeared that Keeble had the last year worked the plaintiff’s farm on terms, and that the stack of oats was his share of the produce. Plaintiff failed to prove defendant’s liability, and as to damages it was rather on the other side, as Plaintiff’s pigs and cattle had consumed the greater part of the stack. Verdict for amount paid into Court. On Monday evening last a meeting was held to consider the advisability or otherwise, of getting up a Spring Race Meeting, all present being in favor of a Meeting, it was decided to have ono day’s racing on Tuesday, September 20, and that the programme bo advertised in the Dunstan Times.

J. hear that the miners throughout the district are in a very fair way of doing, and that a large Chinese population are expected to locate themselves on the Manorhum this coming summer—our prospects therefore aro not ao gloomy as they hare been.
