GOLD ESCORT RETURNS.
(TO THE EDITOR OV THE DUNSTAN TIMES.) Sir: —While I am undesirous to pen anything that might by tho most fastidious bo thought as damaging to the interests of Cromwell, yet a desire to see fair play induces nje, perhaps rashly to personal interests to address you. It no doubt has struck yon that in the various Escort Returns, Cromwell heads the list, but if the return from each particular place were chronicled, as is adopted with respect to Clyde, a very different state of affairs might be found to exist. Under tho heading “ Cromwell, ” tho gold obtained at Bendigo, Bannockburn, Gorge, Garrick, Lowbum, Nevis, &c., &0., are inculed, and consequently to those located at a distance, presents the picture of attraction that Crorn well alone reaps the benefit of. In the allocation of public monies, Provincial and General Government grants and subsidies, the Tow a alone enjoys the benefit, while the auxiliaries, the rising centres, are shut out in the cold to fatten their more prosperous rural City folk and fireside. I refer particularly to the Nevis, which is and has been for years past an extensive gold producing district, yet forsooth, tho Nevis is seldom or ever mentioned. It Cromwell proper is to reap a ll the gain and advantage, why does she not in the hour of need remember tho roots that have and still continue to support the decaying Tiee? How does it happen that the yield—the gold producing capacity of beautiful Cromwell—the City of dust and sand, (in more senses than one) is not published as “Town of Cromwell, ” and aga J nst that. “ Nevis.” By comparison it would be readily seen where the milk existed, which produced the cream. The claims of the Nevis have in the past been neglected, and parties interested in diverting the trade to Cromwell, should remember the words of the Poet:— “ Time, but the impression stronger makes, As stream”, their channels deeper wear.” Your’s, &e.,—Scrutator. Nevis, July 8, 187 C.
