CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council was held on Friday evening last. Present : B. Naylor Estp, (Mayor) and Councillors Joss, Beck, andG, Fache. JamesHazlett,Esq.,M.P.C., was also present.
The Mayor, addressing Mr Hazlett, said the meeting was was convened specially to discuss with him, previous to his departure from Clyde, matters relating generally to the town of Clyde and district. The subject of the utmost importance was the road from Butcher’s Gully to Clyde, on the West bank of the Jvlolynenx. He said at the interview he (Mr Hazlett) and he (Mr Naylor) had with his Honor the Superintendent of Otago, respecting the approaches to, and other matters relative to the Bridge, his Honor had distinctly stated that the Town Council building the Bridge, the Government would make 'the road. Now, beyond a survey, and that but a partial one, nothing whatever was done ; without the road, his Worship pointed out tho Bridge was comparatively useless, either to the town of Clyde or to the travelling public. The Council therefore desired that he (Mr Hazlett) would, when in Dunedin, not only in his capacity of M.P.C., but as one of the deputation from the town of Clyde to the Government relative to the Bridge, bring the matter befcTe the Government, and upon them the necessity of having the ( >ad at once proceeded with.
Mr Hazlett said it must be remembered that the sum of L3OO only was placed on the estimates for the road, and that the tenders ?or it were considerably in advance, that, doubtless, was the reason nothing had been done. He, however, would most willingly take the earliest opportunity of laying the whole matter before the Executive, and tho Council might rely on him doing his utmost to get the road made. Through the non-completion of the approaches by the Government simultaneously with the Bridge as promised, a heavy loss had been entailed by the Town. Through a similar ■delay in the construction of the approaches to the Beaumont B*idge, the owners were paid L 25 per week, he (Mr Hazlett) failed to see why the owners of the Clyde Bridge should not be paid the same amount of com. pensation. The Mayor said he had a few weeks since written himself to the Government on the subject, but had not as yet received a reply. The Council would like to ask him (Mr Hazlett) to bring the matter before the Government, Mr Hazlett promising to attend to the matter, and the Mayor having thanked him for giving the Council so patient a hearing, Mr Hazlett withdrew. Resolved That the Town Clerk write to James Hazlett, Esq., M.P.C., in reference to the above matters. The question of the General Government taking over the Bridge was discussed at some length, eventuating in a resolution That tho Town Clerk write to V, Pyke, Esq., M.H.R., requesting him to bring the matter of tho Government taking over all bridges on tho main lines of road over, and throwing them open to tho public as free bridges, before the present Parliament. A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
