It is said that at the caucus meetings of the Provincialist Members, representing Otago and Canterbury, it has been agreed to go in for insular separation—that not being attainable, two Provinces for each Island. Mr Stafford declines either of these alternatives, nothing less than one National Government for New Zealand will be recognised by the Government, nor any apology whatever for Provincial Governments. The Government are carrying all their measures. Betting is taking place—two to one the Government will not lie bested. The Provincial party are nowhere, and they are only injuring their cause by factious opposition. It is said that there will be seven Counties proposed for Otago—Wakatip and the Dunstan, and 'probably taking in Mount Ida, will bo one, the latter is looked upon favorably, and as the best suited to the interest of the gold-fields. Mr Do Latour, although a Provincialist, is a capital representative for the goldfields’ interests. Messrs Pyke and Manders have made short, but well turned speeches, and are listened to by the house. There is considerable distress in Canterbury amongst the unemployed—hundreds out of work. The Gold-fields’ members, Pyke, Manders, Brown and De Latour all work well for the Gold-fields’ interest No Goldfields members ever worked better, differences of opinion respecting Abolition or Provincialism docs not affect the desire for the common good.
