It was explained that the meeting was called to consider applications for the situation of toll collector, and other business.

Applications (21) were opened and read. After discussion as to mode of election it was concluded that it should be decided by open voting, which showed (as follows : G. Murray, 3; T. Hannon, 2; G. Grey, 1. Mr G. Murray was then declared elected.

Resolved—That Collector of Tolls find two sureties of L 25 each. Resolved—That the Town Clerk draw out agreement between the Corporation and the Toll Collector, a clause in the agreement to distinctly state that the collector give his undivided attention to the collection of tolls and such other work as may be authorised by the Council, and that a month's notice on either side bo given to determine agreement.

A statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure for the year 1876-7 was laid on the table and agreed to, and ordered to be advertised in the Provincial Government Gazette and in the DuNStan Times. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the meeting.

A special meeting of the Clyde Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday afternoon last, the 22nd inst. Present—B. Naylor, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Welsford, Joss, and G. Fache. The Mayor explained that he had interviewed Mr Grant, the contractor of the Bridge, and understood from him that he would have the Bridge completed and ready for traffic in about a week or ten days ; he had accordingly convened the meeting to ascertain the views of the Councd as to what form the opening ceremony should take, and to arrange for same. He had a'so telegraphed to Mr Fergus, the engineer, to know when he would be prepared to officially pass the work, but that, as yet, he had received no reply. Or Fache saidit would be of no use delaying the opening, and he would suggest that it be on Wednesday. July 5. Cr Welsford would ask if it was decided whether there would be a ball or a concert in the evening ; he asked the question because he had heard the Mayor would give a bad on the occasion.

Tbs Mayor said, if the Council thought that the duty devolved upon him, and expressed a wish that he should do so, he would. He thought, however, that the town should do the whole thing. Cr Joss was in favor of a Ball, as it was always looked forward to with more pleasure than a concert.

Resolved—“ That the official opening of the Clyde Bridge be on Wednesday, July sth, at 1 p.ra., and that it be celebrated by an Invitation Ball, in the Town Hall, in the evening.”

Resolved—“ That the Council form itself into Committee to arrange programme of action for the day s proceedings. Resolved—“ That Councillors Welsford, Beck and Pache be a Committee to arrange for the providing of refreshments, for both the opening and the Ball.”

The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Clyde Brass Band, asking them to give the Town the benefit of their assistance during the day, and at the Ball ; also, to have Circular invitations printed, and to have notice of the ceremony advertised in the Dgnstan Times. The meeting then adjourned.
