QUEENSTOWN.

(FROM OUR CoRRI SI'O'DENT.) The Regatta on St Patrick’s day was marked hy a terrible catastrophe a id resulted in the loss of two lives, The day was a very squally one, and it appears that three men named Hodees, Caspar and Summers h>d set out in a sailing boat from near the One-Mile Creek, intending to witnes** the sport, when about two humlred yards off Messrs Robertson and Co’s jetty the boat was caught in a violent squall, and went down like a s.tone, leaving only Summers floating upon the water, and wdio was speedily rescued. The bodies were recovered on Sunday evening, anil it is expected that the boat, a very fine one. will be raise!—incmnpetency to manage the sails appears to have been the cause of the accident. Hodges and Caspar were both married men, and leave large families of children behind them—a subscription for tneir relief has been already set afoot by some benevolent citizens, aud I have no : doubt but that it will be liberally responded 1 to. Taken as a whole, the Regatta was a i very great succ 'ss, and to all appearances, i it will beco ue a regular annual festival on St Patrick’s Day. In the evening there was a dramatic performance ami concert at tho Town Hall in aid of the Cat nolle School, j Th«* entertainment pissed off exceedingly ' well, while in a pecuniary sense, the result I was satisfactory. < Ither hoat-nves fo'lowed on Saturday, the principal event being a ! walkover for the Riverton crew, the smoothness of the water m iking it impossible tor any of the local boats to compete with the slightest shadow of success. | The Hospital Committee have reconi sidered their former decision nf appointing Dr Cecil Jackson to the temporary charge of the charge of tho Hospital during Dr Douglas’s twelve months leave of absence, and on Saturday last they rescinded their former motion and put in Dr Scott. It is said that Dr Jackson insists upon the appointment being conferred upon him, so how the affair will end, it is difficult to say. A rather amusing case of “pot calling the kettle black ” was heard before Mr 11. Beetham, R.M., and Mr C. C. Bnyes, J P —it was that of a fellmongcr, G. Ludiman, objecting to his neighbor, Mr C. Barnett, a a butcher, obtaining a slaugbte ing license, on account of the offensive sraills generate I by s'aughtering According to witnesses examined it was hard to judge which business was the most off -nsive to the olfactory nerves, and tho Bench very rightly con. si lered that an amalgamation of stinks co ild not possibly mike things worse, and decided to grant the application accord' ingly.
