- o Mr Kynnorsloy, the Birmingham stipendiary magistrate, has received the following charming epistle, embellished with a sketch of a coffin and a mutilated body : “ I shall come to your house some day and cut your throat. Then, I shall cut you open and then cut your entrails out; then cut your limbs all off and your head. Hera rahbr you shall suitor for giving mo six months. Beware I Got your coffin made. I will cut your heart out and eat it. Good bye till I see you again. From a Friend, mind!” The man and dog fight, ’which excited such attention in England last year, has been capped in India by a “ man and cat ” combat at Hyderabad in India. What became of the cat is not told, but the man’s face is reported to ho in a shocking condition. A Leopard escaped from his cage in the hold of a ship the other day at Philadelphia, and for three days baffled all attempts
to catch him, despite (he efforts of an immense crowd, a detachment of police, a steam pump, a posse of keepers from the Zoological Gardens, and any number of amateur animal tamers. He was at last secured by the very simple method of a trap baited with food. Dr Livingstone’s dog is now visiting Bombay in company with Lieutenant Murphy, the African traveller. This faithful creature, the Times of India tells us—the only dog which has survived a journey into Central Africa—travelled from Zanzibar to Unyanyerabe with the great explorer, and then followed Livingstone’s body back to the coast. The dog wears a medal bearing the following inscription : “ Mabel, F. R. G. S., late Livingstone East Coast African Expedition, ISTJ-4.” It is a small-sized bull terrier, white In color. It travelled 1,500 miles on foot in Africa—a wonderful effort in pedestriaaism—before it w.r* twelve months old, and it has since travelled 15,000 miles by sea. A woman has recently died from starvation in London, at whosefaide was discovered an old skirt, with a quantity of gold sewed in the waistband.
Dr Konealy, attended by his two song, addressed the inhabitants of Woolwich some time ago. Mr lumber solicitor, presided. The lecture hall was crowded, notwithstanding a charge for ’admission. Opposition was not lacking, but the opponents were threatened with being tossed through the windows, and there was a liberal display of thick sticks, but there was no collision or violence. The Archbishop of.Tuam, Dr McHale, has recently made several changes in this diocese. Ho removed the llev. hi. O'Connor from Williamstown, whe-e ho had been for nearly nine years, and appointed the Rev. Mr Loftns ia his place. Some of the parishioners were not agreeable to the appointment, and refused to give up the chapel or hear Mass as long as the Rev. Mr Loftus was in the parish. Matters looked so serious that a large force of constabulary, under the command of the sub-inspector at Dunmore, and Mr Bagot, local magistrate, wore drafted into Williamstown on Sunday. At the hour appointed for Mass the constabulary formed a cordon round the altar rails. The body of the chapel became thronged, and a rush was made to dislodge the reverend gentleman from the altar, or at least prevent him saying Mass. With the greatest difficulty the constabulary prevented the people from ascending the altar stops. They had to lix their bayonets so threatening were the people. At the Wolverhampton Police Court on Monday, Richard Allman, butcher, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for having in his possession the carcase of a diseased pig. The prisoner gets his living by making savoury edibles, known as ‘Yorkshire Ducks,’ and ho bought the pig for that purpose. An Irishman named Deranoy was committed for trial at Middlesborough to the assizes for a murderous assault upon a widow named Dobson, living next door to him. He struck liar throe blows with a
pair of tongs, causing serious wounds. Five hundred of the very poorest people to be found in the neighborhood of Woolwich were entertained with a substantial tea in the lecture hall there. The Earl of Cavan presided, supported by several officers and philanthropists. Benjamin Franklin’s original Printing Press is to be shown at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, by the side of a Hoe Lightning cylinder press of the latest construction.
At tlio Burslem Police Court, a boy rained Marsh was charged with firing a pistol at an engine-driver named Ashley, and two other boys, Beesbon and Hall, were charged with aiding and abetting. It appeared that the lad called the attention of his companions to a mid-day train, and indicating the engine-driver, told them to watch him shoot ‘the Jack-in the-box.’ Several of the shots fired struck the engineer. Tie boys wero ordered to he privately whipped. At a recent wedding, the minister was about to salute the bride, when she stayed him with, “ Ho, mister ; 1 give up them vanities now.” Mr D ,if you will get ray coat done by Saturday, 1 shall be for ever indebted to you.” “If that's your little game, it won’t be done,” said the (ailor. The Inundation Fund at the Mansion House has amounted to 1,10,000. An English editor calls a certain kind of religion “ pewism,”
