ROXBURGH.
January 2(5, 1879. • Mr Horace Bastings has been returned to tho House of Repr aentatives as member for the Waikaia District by a far larger majority than was expected by his most sanguine supporters. Mr Mervyn retired from the contest in the forenoon of the Polling-day, and a large number of bis supporters cave their vote to Mr Bastings, thus perhaps giving that gentleman a larger majority than would otherwise have been the case ; however, as was expected VI r Ireland has been defeated, and we trust, to use a common phrase—the right man is in the right place. It has been so often rumored that Mr D. cid was en route for this place and would positively arrive on a certain day—and we have been so often disappointed that we must for the future not expect till we actually see him—and therefore he must not be disappointed if he finds us in our shirt sleeves—or on the other hand, taking a quiet siesta during this hot weather. What little excitement that has existed amongst us for some time past being over, and the Molyneux low enough, most of the claims are in work, and a good deal of energy is displayed to regain the lost ground after so long a spell consequent on the flo idetl state of the river. lam happy to report that the timber required for the fluming of Forbes and Go’s race is being conveyed towards the hea l of the race, an 1 trust they will meet with that success which bas so far characterised their arduous enterprise. The Athenaeum building is nearly compVel, and it is purpose 1 to open it on the 17th March next, should nothing unforeseen occur, with a Concert and Ball, lo- 1 getlier with a p 'rforman"e of the Dramatic \ Club to an pnent the funis in hand for the benefit of the Tuancka Hospital—they gave a performance on the night of the 13th instant at M'Leod’s Robert Burn’s Hotel, Patrick—there was a very gool attendance considering the smallness of the place. The first part of the programme ennsiste 1 of songs and recitations, in which the Misses Begg Rees, and M‘Dowel I elicited great applause, the same may be said of Mr J. J. Smi hj in the “ Speaking Automaton,” but Mr A. Buchan fa rly convulsed the audience. Mr IT. Bastings, who was present, was in luced to give a recitation, and on being encored sang “ The Lost Child ” with great effect. After an interval of ten minutes the laughable Comedietta of the “ Absent Man ’ was enacted, and considering the difficulties and inconvenience of the temporary st ge, passed off without the slightest hitch. The room was then cleared and dancing kept up till the early hours of the morning, and it must he sai l that all present enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
