GENERAL ELECTION.

Dunstan District. The Official declaration of the Poll was made in the Court House, Clyde by W. L. Simpson, Esq., Returning Officer on Wednesday the 29th instant at noon, about 20 persons were present. The Returning Officer having read over the numbers polled at each booth for either candidate declared Mr Vincent Pyko duly elected Member of the House of Representatives for tlie Dunstan District. Mr Vincent Pyko, who was the only person present, rose and said—ln speaking to those present he addressed himself to the entir constituency. He desired to return his hearty thanks to those who had conferred upon him the highest honor and the greatest trust that any man could possess or enjoy in a free country—that of re.presenting his fellow citizens in the parliament of the country. In his case the honor was greater because it proved that he had the respect and confidence of those to whom he was best known, and whom he best know in all New Zealand. Ho did not desirre to draw any invidious comparisons, hut he could not avoid expressing his gratitude to the men who had won such a glorious victory at a newer Bannockburn, and also to the firm friends who had so successfully combatted a small but turbulent faction at Alexandra, and when he thought of the people nf Clyde, of Tinkers and Drybread, of Black’s, and of Nevis, in each of which districts an all hut unanimous vote had been recorded in his favor—language was quite inadequate to express his pride, his pleasure, and his sense of gratitude. He was one of the proudest men in New Zealand that day, and it should bo the effort of his life to repay' the absolute personal kindness wherewith he had been received. He could not promise to obtain everything which he had advocated, nor could he assure them that every request made by the constituency would be granted, though if he was as successful in the latter respect for the Dunstan district as he had been for his late constituency, Wakatipu, they would not have occasion to complain, at any rate he would try his utmost in their behalf. As for the minority who had voted against him, no doubt they had done so from conscientious motives, and he forgave them, for he was sure they did not know what they had tried to do. Of his opponent he would not say anything. Ho (Mr Pyko) had by,the help of the people, won the light and he could now afford to be generous, and his triumph was all the, greater because it had been brought about by the spontaneous action of the people. He had a right to ho proud of the result, and proud of the constituency which had so nobly supported him, and he hoped in some measure to repay them hereafter. As to the kindness shown to him lie never could forget it whilst he lived. Ho desired again to thank the electors for returning him, and would return his thanks to the Returning Officer for the manner in which he had conducted the election. . The following arc the number of votes polled at each Polling Booth :
