Mr Vincent Pyke has rendered another good service to this district. Hearing that the men employed in the Garrick Race were not likely to get their wages till late on in January, Mr Pyke at once communicate:! with the Government, strongly urging that an advance should be made to pay the men before Christmas. Yesterday he re eived the following telegram, which he has kindly placed at our disposal : “ Wellington, Dec. 23, 1875. Vincent Pyke, Esq , Cromwell, Otago. The Treasury will be requested to Imprest Warden Simpson with five hundred pounds (L 300) for the Garrick Water Race, and the Warden will be instructed to take the necessary action. C. E. Haughton, Under Secretary for Goldfields.”—lt will be seen that Mr Pyke has both the ability and the will to serve the people.
