ROXBURGH.

(from our correspondent.) December 8, 1875. Tho heavy flood of last week, higher than any we have seen for some years past, caused serious damage to some of the claims, and all mining is at a standstill. As tho river has risen to within a foot of the last flood this week again, there seems little proba bility of the claims being worked till after (hristmas ; advantage, however, is taken by the miners of the time, to improve their holdings, and a few are away to tho shearing, which has commenced on the neighboring stations. The rainfall has done a vast amount of good, to the crops, and the orchards at Coal Creek are looking remarkably well, and there is every prospect of abundance of fruit.

It is reported that a requisition has been forwarded to Mr H. Bastings, to contest the district in the Roman Catholic Interest, hut nothing further is known. No doubt Mr Bradshaw will seek fto he re-elected, and there are many who will support him ; hut Mr D. H. Mervyn is the only gentleman at present who is openly in the field, and purposes addressing the electors at the close of this, and during the following week, when, perhaps, we shall be in a better position to speak not only of him, but also of the other candidates.

A public meeting was held on Saturday last, the 4th instant, to take into consideration matters concerning the Mount Benger Medical Furnl when the gentleman of the Committee for the past year tendered their resignation, and a new Committee was appointed to carry on the fund. Dr Leahy has now been a little over twelve months amongst us, and we hope that the present Committee will be enabled to retain him amongst us. Considering how seriously the want of a suitable medical practitioner has been felt hero, we ought to be very careful that we are not again left in the same position. Another accident occurred in this neighborhood last week. A Chinaman in tho employ of the Dumbarton Rock Hot-1, died from internal injuries ho received from tho kick of a horse. In the absence of the Coroner tor the district, an inquest was held by J. Bathgate Esq., J P., and a verdict of accidental death was returned.

XVith the approach of Christmas, the ladies who have the management of the Church of England bazaar, are busily engaged with the work in hand. A number of handsome gifts have been forwarded from Dunedin, and we hope to see it well patronised.

The Amateur Dramatic Club are rehearsing “The Absent Man” with an entirely new caste, and also an after-piece, which will bo performed during the holidays, for the benefit of the Tuapeka Hospital. The parts of Georgina and Jervina, in the Absent Man, are entrusted to Miss Rees and Miss M‘Dowall, who, judging from what is seen of them at the rehearsals, will make a great hit.
