CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

“O The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, Town Hall, on Wednesday evcnbig'Past, the Ist instant. Present: The Mayor, and Councillors Welsford, Fache, Hastie, Moore, and Joss. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence, as follows, was read and received. From the Alexandra Corporation, re the Waikaia Bush road, andasking the co-operation of this Council in urging on the Government the necessity of the immediate prosecution of the work, and suggesting that a deputation from the Councils of Alexandra, Roxburgh, Clyde, and Cromwell proceed at once to Dunedin on the subject, accompanied by a copy of the letter received from the Provincial Government to the effect that the work would be proceeded with when there was available funds.—From the Naseby Corporation, askinglinformation regarding theestab'ishing of the Clyde Pound.—From F. J. Wilson, solicitor, with Bye-laws and Regulations as amended. The outward correspondence was read and adopted. Cr Welsford said, in reference to the letter from the Alexandra Town Council, he did not think this council was in a position to lay out any money in a deputation. In any other direction he would be willing to render every assistance towards having the Waikaia Bush road made. From the tenor of the letter from the Government on the subject he looked upon the vote as shelved. The Mayor did not feel inclined to spend any money over the matter. It was finally decided that the Town Clerk write to the Alexandra Council conveying the above. The Bye-laws and Regulations as amended, were laid on the table and approved of. Cr Welsford asked it the Corporation were charging the Hospital for the water supplied— he said the water had cost a very large sum of money, from which there was little or no return, and he thought that all parties who used the water should pay a something. Exolanations were entered into during which it transpire 1 that the Hospital used to pay five shillings per week for water from the party the Corporation bought the race of, and the Hospital Committee, though they had never been tendered an aconnnt were of the belief they were indebted for the water they used. Resolved—That the Hospital Committee he charged at the rate of five shillings per week for the use of water from the Town Race. Councillor Welsford said dissatisfaction existed as to the manner the street cleaner performed, not so much his duties, but as to the part of the town lie devoted his attention to—he was of opinion that if he had to attend only to the East and West wards, and do nothing in South ward, that the two first named should pay for the services and he would table a motion to that effect. After some discussion the matter was drawnCouncillor Moore asked if any steps were being taken to have the approaches to the Bridge from the stone piers to the abutments completed—he was given to understand that the connecting link in the structure was not included in either the contract for the approaches or the Bridge. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Government that if this work was not proceeded with ami that immediato’y, the hridee would he finished and lying idle, and as extra reasons why the work should be at once stai ted, to point out the great pecuniary loss that would fall on the Council by any delay after the completion of the Bridge. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the meeting.
