AN OUNCE OF WHISKEY.
An oM Highlander noted for his love of whiskey most of his life, was induced to sign the teetotal pledge. After abstaining for some time, not feeling quite so well as ho used to do, he would consult the doctor. Meeting the man of medicine on his way to another patient, Donald, stopping him told him how ho felt, asked his advice. The doctor said, <M believe, Donald, you have been used to a little spirits in your time !‘’ “ That I have, sir, and too much at odd times.” “ Weil, Donald, take my advice, and take a little each day." “ But, sir, ye ken, I am a teetotaller now, and dare nob take whiskey ’, « M Took ! pooh !” said the doctor, “ It is no violation of your pledge to take it as a medicine.” “And how much should I take at a time, sir 1 “Oh ! about an ounce.” Donald on his way home, wondered how much whiskey went to an ounce. When he got into the house, be got his eve on a little fellow, a grandson, who had just come home from school and said, “ Johnny, just take your slate and count up to me how much whiskev goes to an ounce.” The lad turned up one of his tables, and bawled out. “ sixteen drachp\s make an ounce.” The old man knew well how much went to a dram of whiskey, but sixteen of thorn as medicine was a staggerer. However, he very prudently considered there was little use asking advice if it was not followed ; so off he sent Johnny at once for the medicine, shouting after him to be sure and call at old John M'Dougal's on his way and tel! him that he wanted t him immediately. When old John and the whiskey arrived, the two worthies sat down and had a jolly evening over the doctor’s medicine.
