Extracts of a meeting held on Wednesday, the 13th instant. THE DEFERRED PAYMENTS SYSTEM. The Provincial Solicitor’s opinion as to whether a lessee on deferred payments is entitled to purchase at any time after obtaining his lease, was read. He (the Solicitor) said the objection submitted to him had been practically disposed of by the Board, acting under the advice of Messrs Barton, Burton, and Haggitt. All these gentlemen had advised the Board than an agricultural lessee is entitled, at the end of three years, to apply for and obtain an exchange lease for seven years. lie concluded as follows :—“ If the opinions of Messrs Barton, Haggitt, and Turton are correct, that the lease is for seven years, then the lessee can purchase at once, but if nnt—that is, if the lease must he for ten yeaes—then also, I think he can purchase, but he must pay his 255. ” Mr J. S. Webb said his client thought it very hard to bo deprived of certain rights which he should possess. Mr Strode sai l this was a matter of the greatest moment to the whole body politic of Otago, because it struck at the root of the deferred payment system. The Commissioner thought the matter would he speedily decided, without expense to the public. Mr Strode : The Board will push it on all the - can, because there are numerous applicants. The question is very important. It was resolved that the Judge's opinion sliould to asked under clause 6 of the Otago Waste Lands Act, 1857, the Provincid Solicitor to bo asked to draw up a case for submission to the Bo;rd, and afterwards to the Supreme Court. PREEMPTIVE RIGHT. Messrs Groin and Turnbull applied for permission to purchase 69 acres, balance of pre-emptive on run 30Sd.—Approved under clause ISO** ..APPLICATIONS TO PURCHASE UNDER LEASE. The following applications to purchase under deferred payments lease were received :—John Pitches, section 4, block 11., Tiger Hill district,; Peter Bntel, sections 32, 44, 50, and 70, block VI,, Shotover ; Joseph Shearing, sections 17. 10, and 23. block 1., Crooks 1 on ; John Waldron, section 19, block 11., Tiger Hill, Postponed for Provincial Solicitor’s opinion.
