BENDIGO.

Particular activity is observable in every ■portion of the Bendigo District, and the utmost confidence exists with all, that the district is but just entering upon its golden days. The Cromwell Company’s claims are yielding their wonted quota of gold—that is for the quantity raised—but from the frequent stopping of the battery, the quantity ■ef stone does not appear to be raised that was hitherto ; what this is to be attributed I cannot pretend to say, I merely note the fact. I see that they are sinking a shaft on the extreme western boundary of their claims, and have reached a depth of nearly 100 ft. From the appearance of the ground they are not a great way-off tire reef. At this end the reef mates a considerable dip. On the parallel reefs to the Cromwell Company there are two claims in active work, Roony and Co., and Parry and Co. The latter are sinking, and have got down about 60 feet, following down the back but without stone so far. The former, Rooney and Co.;.are getting out some splendid stone, •and if it but yields according to appearances and trials, all previous yields on Bendigo will be completely thrown is the Shade. The stone from this claim is to be manipulated by the Old Aurora plant, which has been thoroughly overhauled for the occasion. I am almost afraid to write what return is expected,' however. I may as well say that every bit of stone it is thought will average lOoztotothe ton. Next in order comes the Reliance, which, so far, is a blank, and it is to bo regretted muchly, as never was money more honestly spent on Bendigo than on this claim. I must now move to the ■Lucknow, which is in full operation getting •out stone. This company have had their battery put in order, and by this time will be crushing; therefore, the question of payable reef or'duffer will soon he solved. There are sanguine temperaments and croakers, the former, however, who are in the majority, look for favorable results, and I must say I am one of the number. Proceeding towards the Crook I next come to the Deep Level, which is being pushed a-hcad with spirit. Nothing, so far, of a payable character has been struck, but there is no doubt, as the tunnel is pierced

further into the bill, sojnething good yvill |'be reached. Lastly, to the neighborhood of the Old Alta and Rise and Shine claims, where there are a good few men working, and prospecting the former has been taken up by .a party, who, from what I can hear, have struck good stono in tho old workings, also in a distinct reef. That they have a prospect before them is evidenced by the fact of their having leased tho Alta plant at a high rate. The Rise and Shine (re-chris-tened tho Eureka) is also in fall swing, and on good gold ; this so far is certain by tho old Company buying the Alta plant, subject to the agreement between the old Company and the new lessees. The price I have heard but am not in a position to say.
