—o— A Arab chief was lying a sleep on day wen he was woke np by foelin some thing in his trousers pockits. He saw it was a ostrich, and lay still to see wot it wude do. First it took out his peg top and laid it on one side. Then it took out his kite string, which was "wound on a stick, and put it with the top. Then all his marbles was took out, and laid away too. Then some cotton reels, and some pieces of cole, and two slate pencils, and a lump of chok, and a brass button, and some toffy, and a tack hammer, and a handflo of nails, and a oyster she!, and a rubber bol, and a steel pen, which it piled up to one side ; and the last thing it foun was a jacknife with 32 blades. When ic had got everything it could fine in the chief’s pockets, it went and stood over the pile, and et one thing after a other till it had everything but the jacknife, wen it see the chief a settin np a watchin it. Fo it took the jacknife and turned it over and over, and tasted it, and put it down, and picked it np agin, and at the last hrot it to the chief and laid it down a little way of, and stood back and looked wishful. Then the chief, he said, “ Oh, I see bow it is; you don’t like to eat such a nice mossel as that with out you git the flavor of it; you want it peeled.” So tho chief he opened all the blades of the knife and laid it down, p.nd then the ostrich came np and swallered it, and smiled and licked his bil, like it said wot a delishous knife ! And tbe chief felt almoce as if he cad taste it hissclf.
