Royal Duke was got by Champion, (well known to be tho best horse imported to this Colony), out of the celebrated maio Jessy, imported in 1863, by Messrs Emmery and Straghan, from Tasmania. The same year she gained tho Taieri Agricultural Society’s first prize for the best colonial bred mare, and the second prize for tho best draft mare at the show, beating Mr Nimmo’s black mare imported direct from Scotland, and the following year took prizes both in Dunedin and the Taieri.
