AN IMMORTAL DONKEY.

The Cincinnati papers record the death in the grounds of the Zoological Society, in that city, of the heroic donkey that whipped an African lioness last March. The circumstances of the battle are given in detail. It seems that a boy who was leading the donkey stopped in front of the lioness’s cage to look at her. In a moment the ferocious beast hurst the bars of the cage and attacked the little donkey, seizing him by the flank and tearing him. With great self-possession he reached for the back of the lioness with his teeth and gave her such a grip that she let go her hold and retreated to her cage. In the commotion that ensued the donkey again got near the lioness, when she once more bounded for him, but he met her with his heels and turned her topsy-tnrvey. But the wound he received in the first encounier was more serious than it was at first supposed to be. Every possible effort was made to save him, but medical skill proved nnavaili g and he gave up the ghost late’y. The fame of that donkey will be great, and will inure, it is to be hoped, to the benefit, and honor of Ids'race. Truly “ the bottom rail lias got on top ” in these days. The jackass has become king of the beasts.
