SURGERY EXTRAORDINARY.
. ■’ >■. ; —o— The sconefopens in a quiet corner of tho wild hush on the extreme boundary between where man has partly conquered and where nature reigns supremo. Two men aro busy, not felling the giants of the forest, hut uprooting the dense undergrowth and by the aid of fire, disposing of the remains of the fallen heroes of former years. In plain bush language, they were clearing. Presently (to their surprise) a quaintlooking old Irishman appeared, with his head wrapped in a large woollen comforter. “ Good morning, boys; is the masthor here ?’* “ No, Jim ; he’s gone to the township this afternoon ; but what’s the matter with your head ?” “0, then, it’s I’m the unfortunate creature that’s been in such agony that I’ve not slept a wink this four days and nights with the toothache, and 1 came all this way to look for the masther, ■because he’s so skilful, to see if he’d pullfit out for me.” Hereupon the smaller of the two men, dark at any time, now almost black with charcoal, etc., and scarcely intelligent enough to know how to put a handspike under a log, and whose knowledge of physiology compro bended the difference between front and hack teeth, but not between the lungs and stomach, said, “Is it a front tooth or a back one?” “Oh, sure, it’s this one,” lifting the comforter and exposing a solitary discoloured fang, not quite so long as the tooth of a rake, projecting somewhat invitingly forward, “ and its rather loose, for 1 tried to pul) it out myself.” Well, then,’’ said Billy, “ I’ll pull it out for yer and stooping down, soon produced the dirty thong out of his hoot, formed a loop with the double of it, and made fast; then placing his hand in the orthodox manner, one jerk, that might have uprooted a young blue gum, brought the offending member away. More elated with his success that hurt by the wail of his patient, Billy rather abruptly asked, “Will you have any more out?” But 1 tho kind offer was declined ; and after rocking to and fro some time by the huge log fire, Jim departed, minus his tooth and free from toothache.
