NASEBY.

—o— August 23rd.

The Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society’s Ball, held on Friday evening last, was a great success. Although, perhaps not the most numerously attended affair of the season, it has not been surpassed in enjoy ability. Those present seamed very sociable, and the amusement partook more of the pleasant evening party than that to be found at the more stiff and formal Ball. The Town Hall was prettily and appropriately decorated with evergreens and flags. The most noticeable part of the decorations appeared on the stage opposite the entrance door, where was displayed a green flag hearing the golden Harp of Erin. A lamp behind brought this out exqnisitively. Whether the entertainment was a financial success or not I cannot say, hut certainly, as a sociality it has not been surpassed in Naseby. It is doubtful whether the doekey Club will hold a Spiing Meeting this year, or not. The pluck of the Clubs m your district has been much commended. It is questionable—taking into consideration the immense efforts required on the part of the Secretary to get the Stewards together, and then to get them to act, last year—whether we shall follow suit. There was a pretty general sentiment last year that it would have been the more advisable course had the Stewards concentrated their energies in the Summer meeting. It is likely that they will adopt this course this year, and the meeting that is held will probably he as much enjoyed and as well attended in proportion as would the two. A gloom has been cast over the town by the death of a young man, travelling in the capacity of pianoforte tuner for Mr G. R. West, of Dunedin. He arrived here in the early part of last week, and had only remained a few days, when the fact of the climate being too severe for his constitution made itself apparent. Inflammation on the lungs attacked him, and last night ho died, his illness lasting only a few days. His friends arrived before his death. This , death has been more noticed on account of the nature of the disease that caused it. Tnere have been six or seven cases of this disorder in Naseby this winter, occasioned by the extreme rigidity and cbangcablcness of the climate ; but this case above mentioned is the first thtit has terminated fatally. The winter, however, is now happily drawing to a close, although at present the ground is covered with snow. The demand for land in this district has not at all decreased. To-day is the date fixed for applications for sections in a block of 1200 acres near H vde; and at the nominated hour over a dozen applicants put in their appearance at the District Land Office. The survey of another block of land of 1200 acres, along the banks of the Taieri near the Sowhurn, has just been completed, and guarantees are given that, as soon ns the land is proclaimed open, the amount surveyed will ho taken up to an acre. If this guarantee is verified, a similar amount of land in the same locality is promised. There yet remains-to he surveyed a block of 5000 acres near the Taieri, southeast of Naseby, which is said to ho of excellent quality. Moreover, there, is an immense slice of country to he thrown open on the Hundreds system, on Mr Rrcntou’s run, to the cast of Naseby. The District Sutvey Department has been kept very '’busy ot.lftto, most of the time at its disposal being occupied in the emvey of blocks of land for settlement
