ROXBURGH.
(PllOJl A COURKSPON'DKUT.) August 9, 1875. Perhaps there is not a district on the goldfields of Otago where sluicing is carried on mom systematically or with greater success than at the Toviot. As far hack as the claims are worked payable gold exists, and there are flats where handsome returns would bo realised if water could he brought to bear on them. A large race is being cut by Forbes and party to the ground in the vicinity of the Dumbarton Rock, and Green and party aro engaged in constructing a water raising apparatus, for the purpose of working the ground in the same locality. The Toviot stream not only affords an ample supply during the winter and spring months, but an immense quantity of water runs to waste during this season, and the storing of this waste water has long been a matter of consideration with the miners of the district, but no active steps have been taken till the present time A petition, however, has just been forwarded to the House of Representatives, showing the practicability of forming a largo reservoir or dam at the head of the Teviot, at a comparatively small outlay, owing to the natural advantages of the locality indicated, and thus afford not only a constant supply to tho races already in use, but cause others to be constructed, and be Hie means of giving lucrative employment to a larger number of miners than at present. This district has not received any pecuniary aid for mining purposes, and it is to bo regretted that the House was not petitioned before the L 30.000 sot aside for works on the goldfields was nearly, if not all, spout; hut we must hope, believe, and endme all things. The performance of the Amateur Dramatic Club for tho benefit of Mr j. Pennell was a success, “ Cool as a Cucumber ” w'as played by special desire, and performed with greater freedom than on a former occasion. Tho Song “ Tiro Now Chum Girls ” and tho^ afterpiece, “ Handy Andy ” kept the audience in roars of laughter. The Club met on tho following night, and Mr E. Hughes, on behalf of tho members, presented Mr Pennell with a purse of It govs., and in doing so wished him health and prosperity, and expressed the regret felt
by the Club at tho loss they would sustain in his valuable services Mr Pennell having returned thanks, a couple of hours was devoted to conviviality. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho 1.0.0. T. was hold on Friday evening when tho following Officers were installed for the ensuing quarter P.W.C.T Bro. J, Snell :W. C.T., Bro. H. Blinam ; W.V.T., Bro. R. Lind ; W.C., Bro. A ; Tamblyn j W.S., W. C. Hodges; W, F.S.', Bro. Alexander Carlan ; W.T., Bro. E. Kurtzmau; W.M., Bro. 0. Hill; W.1.C., Bro. H. Bees; W .0.G., Bro, J. Borland; R.H.S., Sister E. Rees; L.H.S., Sister J. Andersen ; W.D.M., Sister S. Hill; W.A.S., Sister A Rocs. The financial state of the Lodge is satisfactory, and there are between 70 and SO members on tho books. The weather has been excessively cold during the past week, yet the river is falling but slowly. The flood of last week swamped the claims at tho Fourteen-mile Beach, hut it is expected that work will bo resumed in the course of a day or two.
