QUEENSTOWN.
—o—(from our own corrfsponden r.) The latest sensation here is the establishment of a second newspaper—“ The Wakatip Chronicle ” —to oppose the Wakatip Mail,” which is accused of all sorts of delinquencies, in the shape of containing' no local news, general inattention to the wants of the district; and, whenever a citizen does patronize it in the shape of an advertisement, or an order for printing, the charges are complained against as being excessively high. Great failings on the part of a newspaper or its proprietor. I have no doubt but they are unavoidable in small isolated communities. In this case the opposition does not arise from the causes stated, but is owing to the fact of the Mail having published some letters showing up the misdoings of a few persons who have waxed fat upon the sweets of fortuitous circumstances, sought to presume upon their positions. The public have, however, taken up the cudgels on behalf of the Mail, not that they are particularly in love with it, but, because they love justice and fair play, and have thoroughly set their faces against the dominating influences of cliquism. It is said that the capital is to be L2OOO, Id2oo of which has already been subscribed by the parties feeling themselves aggrieved. No local talent whatever is to be employe I upon the staff of the new paper, it is to be all especially imported from Australia. I fancy, however, that Mr Warren, the proprjetor of the Mail, has not much to fear from his opponents, as in all probability, like many other Queenstown ideas launched with much pomposity and never went any further, this of thenewspaper will share the same fate., ,

Tlie petition for tlie periodical removal of Wardens, alid Mr Beetham in is by no means a myth, as I at first thought it to be. I procured a sight of the petition the other day,,and it contains a very large . number-of signatures. The .desirability of removing Government officers at frequent ’ intervals' is most desirable, especially) in ■ small communities, and whatever may, be urged against it, the soundness of the theory is incontrovertable. Individually, Ido hot think many people are opposed to -Mr Beetham,; and, so far as his decisions are •concerned, they, cannot be questioned. Of course somebody must be on the losing side, and somebody is sure to be dissatisfied. Our Camp officials have been resident here ■for twelve years, and it is high time that we had a change.; J I firmly believe that, ~ werg {lds accomplished,. the place would become musi more prosperous, from the very .fact, that, new, idpas tend more than anything else to advance things. No man pan ■■Vem&iif for twelve, years irca SniaU isolated community, and never scarcely travel beyond its limits, without—as the saying Jins it— 11 growing rusty and goldfields officials are not more immaculate creatures than other people. Travelling sharpens the wits, gives new ideas £0 the brain,; and is generally, beneficial to mankind while we are rubbing against oue-another. In matters pertaining to agriculture there is nothing new. Farm produpe is as unsaleable as ever. Sheep ace in the aseonant everywhere ; almost the whole of the farming community, who hold over one hundred acres of land, are grazing these interesting little animals in' their paddocks. 1 fancy that another year must pass before the farming industry will assume a healthy aspect again, by which time the relative positions of supply and : demand will have been arrived at That there can be 'too much land open for settlement is a truism which has been painfully exemplified in this district.
