A SMART SOLICITOR.

A good story is told concerning a solicitor formerly in practice in Wolverhampton. A person who made a claim of 1.2 15s against a debtor desired this solicitor to support the action when it was heard in the Stonebridge County Court. But it so happened that on the day when the case would come on for hearing there was a certain “ meet,” at which the gentleman of the law desired to be present; and he endeavored to evade his client’s engagement by saying that it would not do for him to spend the whole day at Stonebridge, and put aside “an important engagement,” unless he had a heavy fee. But the client would pay anything rather than not be supported by his solicitor. What did be want 1 LIO. Oh, yes; LlO was nothing to him, and he would rather pay doable the money than be swindled out of the amount due to him. So it was arranged that the solicitor should have LlO for going to Stonebridge to support the claim for L2 15. In the course of a few days the solicitors clerk went to Stonebridge, paid into Court the money in dispute, and his employer (who was thereby “enabled to pocket L 7 ss, and have his day’s sport into the bargain) wrote a letter to his client, somewhat as follows ; “ Dear Sir, —Hearing you had en gaged my services, the defendant has paid the 1.2 15s into court, and there will be no further proceedings in the case.”
