IMPRISONMENT OF BRIGHAM YOUNG.
American papers of the 13th mf March “ At Salt Lake city, on tho 10th of March Brigham Young appeared before Judge Maclean, to show cause why ho had neglected to pay the sum of i GOO, tho cost of the divorce suit, and likewise LIOO alimouy to his former wife, Ann Eliza Young. Brigham entered the court accompanied hy some friends and surrounded hy city police. An immense crowd, chiefly Gentiles, filled the court-room Brigham Young’s counsel requested that his cilent be allowed to retire during the hearing on account of illhealth. The Court declined to accede to the request, and sentenced Brigham Young to pay a fine of 25 dollars, and to he imprisoned in the City gaol for one day. The fine was paid and Brigham was remanded to the penitentiary.sj.The excitement in the city, consequent on Ins* imprisonment, was extraordinary. The Gentiles were jubilant, hut made no parade of their joy. There is a well-credited rumour that several of the wives of Brigham Young will sue for divorces, and that the courts will speedily be busily occupied with the grievances of discontented women. After the above sentence, Brigham Young paid the original sum L7OO to the clerk of tho court. Mr. Young returned home from the penitentiary on the 11th of March escorted by a trqop of friends.”
