CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Wednesday evening, the 30th inst. Present—B. Naylor, Esq , Mayor; and Councillors Hazlett, Welsford, Hueaton, Cox and Beck. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. Outward Correspondence—To Jas. Hazlett, Esq., M.P.C.. accompanied hy resolutions of the Council rt approaches to bridge, and bridle track to the Wai Keri Keri Valley ; and to Secretary of Eivertoh Progress Committee, to the effect that this Council has no printed copies of Bye Laws, and referring to the Provincial Government Gazette containing same, was read and adopted.
Inward Correspondence—From Secretary of Public Meeting held at Win ton, accompanied by resolutions passed at same (see below), and asking the co-operation of this Council ; from Provincial Auditor, asking for information as to revenue of Town, and disbursement of same ; from Mr Jas. Holt, intimating that M’Nally, Hastie, and Co. are applying for the Corporation’s right of water from the War Kori Keri Creek, and offering to protect the same; from M'Nally, Ilaslie, and Co., offering 10s per week for the use of Corporation’s right of water from Wai Keri Keri.
Resolved—That the Town Clerk reply to letter from Secretary of Public Meeting at Winton, to the effect that this Council agree with the spirit of resolutions, and will, in as far as is in their power, co-operate with the meeting.
The following are tho resolutions referred to:—1. That this meeting considers that the prosperity of tho country can only bo assured by the settlement of people on tbo land. 2. That, considering tho groat political influence exerted against land sottlement, this meeting deems it advisable to co-operate with other districts in securing the return of suitable men to tho Council and General Assembly, and otherwise influence legislation as much as possible. 3, That this meeting considers that all blocks of land exceeding 300 aces, sold but uncultivated, tho bona fide property of one man, bo taxed at the rate of 3s per aero. 4. That (copies of jail resolutions passed at this meeting be foi warded to every Goldfields’ Municipality in Otago, requesting co-opera-tion. The Town Cleric was instructed to supply to Pi ovincial Auditor all such iuformotion as required. Letters from J. Holt, and M‘Hally, Hastie, and Co., were ordered to stanp over. Letter from Mr How Johns, standing over from last meeting was now brought up, it was an application to lease a portion of the Municipal Eeserve on tho west bank of the Molyneux, for the purpose of a dam. From explanations entered into, it appeared tho reserve had not yet been effectually made, the letter was ordered to stand over, the Council not having power to deal with it. Tho Town Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs Strode and Fraser, asking them to meet the Government with tho view of having the reserve settled. Cr Hazlett be e stated what ho had done as member for tbo district in the Provincial Council. With regard to the Bridge approa then, he said it wasarranged that plans for same were ordered to he made, and that the work would be commenced as soon as possible after the arrival of Mr Arthur, tho Chief Engineer, who might be expected at Clyde shortly. Regarding the bridle track to Wai Keri Keri Valley, ho had t! e word of the Secretary for Roads and Works that the sum asked for -Lloo—would he available when the season for constructing the same was arrived. As to the road from Butcher’s Gully to tho Bridge, ho had succeeded iu getting L3OO placed on the Estimates, and it was arranged that that sum was to be expended. And in reference to the Gaol at Clyde, a lump sum had been placed on the Estimates, and it was settled that the Clyde Gaol was to be built during the current year. Ho, Mr Hazlett, would now take advantage of tho opportunity and would wish it to he understood that ha had not been guided by the Dunstan Times. He had not been, and would not be, influenced by wbat might appear in that journal. Cr Cox drew attention to the disgraceful state of the road at the northern end of tho Town. He thought L 25 would do all that was necessary. Tha Council not knowing where the boundary of tho Town was, and consequently not certain who was liable for tho work, whether they or the Government. It w»s decided to let the matter stand over till that point was settled. The Town Clerk was authorised to advertise dates of nomination and election of Mayor, Councillors, and Auditors.—(See advertisement.) Accounts amounting to L 23 3s 6d were passed for payment. Resolved, That this Council memorialise the General Government to construct tho line of railway from Tuapeka to Clyde, and the municipalities of Cromwell, Alexandra and Teviot, be invited to memorialise to the same end. A vote of thanks to tho chair concluded the meeting. ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL. Tho usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, on Friday last. Present—Jas. Samson, Esq., Mayor; and Councillors Finlay, Theyers, Beresford, and Rivers. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was road and adopted. The inward correspondence, being a letter from Jas. Hazlett, Esq./M.P.C., re Wakaia Bush Road, was read and received. Resolved—That the Town Clerk be requested to convey to Mr Bastings, M.P.C., tor Tuapeka, the thanks of this Council for his assistance in carrying successfully through the Proviueial Council the vote for the Waikai Bush Road. Resolved—That the offer of the present lessees of the Corporation Water Race for releasing the water race for the ensuing twelve months, be accepted. Resolved—That the Town Clerk be instructed to draw up a memorial to tbo General Government, praying that a sum of money he placed on the Estimates for a new Post and Telegraph Office. The usual vote of thanks to tho chair concluded the meeting.
