Dunedin, June 10th. During tbe gale on Friday five men were drowned by tbe upsetting of a boat. Tbe Invercargill Railway was opened to Mataura Bridge on Monday. It was decided, by a majority of two votes, that tbe Goldfields Secretary’s official residence should be in Dunedin. The funeral of Mr N. Gordon Glassford, at Christchurch, was attended by 250 persons. The coffin was borne on throe oars, by relays of the city rowing clubs. The Daily Times is authorised to contradict the statement that Mr Vogel has placed bis resignation in the hands of his colleagues. Mr J. P. Armstrong is to ask the Council to vole LIOO for a portrait of the late Judge Gray. Mr Donald Reid, in answer to Mr De Lautour, on the reduction of the Gold Du’y question, said he saw great difficulty in giving effect to the wishes of the Council. A motion to purchase the Bannockburn Bridge was lost by 17 votes against 11. The Private Petitions Committee have unanimously agreed that it would be inexpedient to place Mr A feed Keene upon the list of authorised surveyors. The same Committee recommended that Mr Jas. Stewart be paid tbe sum of Ll5O, for approaches made by him to tbe Ferry at Bannockburn crossing of Kawarau. A motion was agreed to for amending Otago Waste Lam’s Act, 1872, substituting 100,000 acres to be thrown open annually under deferred payment system, instead of 30,000. Mr Hawthorne, late Rector of tho High School, is dying. It is said that the Colonial Government will, this session, be prepared with a Bill for the abolition of Northern Provinces, arranged so as Southern can join. The opening of tho Crown Terrace for settlement is, so far, settled. It is recommended that the land be opened under special leases, giving free right of miners to enter at all times, free of charge, except for actual damage. Rights of present occupants to be conserved as practicable. Land not to be alienated. LATEST INTELLIGENCE. Nothing of any importance took place today in tbe Council. There is a sum provided on the main estimates for District Gaols, and it is understood that, if approved of by the Government, sufficient is on to provide for Clyde one. To-day Manders moved that the Cromwell petition for District Court and Gaol, be referred to the Government. It was seconded and supported by Ha’lenstein. Hazlett moved, as au amendment, seconded by J. C. Brown, that it be referred to Goldfields Committee. Hazlett said, in support of amendment, that there was a gaol already in Clyde, and one was not required for Cromwell.—lt was referred to the Goldfields Committee. Hazlett moved tbat|L2ooo bo spent on Waikaia Bush Road. The motion was carried by 17 to IG. Division has just taken place.
