TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE.
Dunedin, May 17. Mr Bastings tabled a motion this afternoon of a want of confidence in the Government. Tho motion was to the effect that the Financial Statement brought down by tho Government was unsatisfactory ; that tho distribution of tho officers was prejudicial to tho interest of the Province, and that a re-adjustment was necessary. Mr Bastings condemned tho Goldfields Secretary residing at Cromwell, and thought that if his salary is not sufficient it should be increased, to enable him to live in Dunedin. He altogether condemned the actions of the Goldfields Secretary. There exists a strong Opposition against the Government, and it will he hard for them to keep their’seats. Mr Wood, a Southland member, seconded the motion this afternoon. A deputation consisting of Messrs Hazlett and Ireland, waited upon the Superintendent, and presented a petition asking for a road to be made to Waikaia Bush. The Superintendent said the matter was one entirely of funds. It is thought the road will be made. May 19. Donald Reid announced the resignation of his Government. Mr Bastings stated that he had been sent for by the Superintendent, and had undertaken to form a Government. The Provincial Council was adjourned until Tuesday dext. The Basting’s government is expected to last but a few days, Nothing definite has yet been settled re new Government. Bastings has made overtures to Reid to coalesce, but this he declined. It is understood that Hallenstein was offered the Treasnrership, hut also declined; Stout also declined yesterday.
