—o — Dunedin, May 13. Provincial Council Wednesday evening. In answer to Mr D« Datour what ohjco. tions the Government had to the appointing of a Mining Board, Mr Me Kellar said the Government had decided not to establish a Mining Board in the interest of the miners themselves., it would be remembered that during last Sitting of the Provincial Council, the Secretary stated in reply to the’Fon mem! Mount Ida that the Government would tahe the matter into their serious consideration. Tho Government did so, and it appeared to them that on the whole the mining regulations were working well, as evidenced by the fact that there was comparativc’y little litigation on the gold-fields. The Government were of opinion that the laws relating to the goldfields at present in force were sufficiently complicated and feared evil would be much ""gravatpd by the establishment of Boards. If the Hon. Memheroonsulte 1 the Goldfields Act he wou'd find the powers of such Boards would he limited entirely to goldmining under mirers’ rights ; and unless the Government was prepared to go in for an extensive alteration of the law the Mining Boards could not deal with gold mining lenses. It was a question whether it could with the cutting of races ; and it certainly could not with cases arising out of tho cn try of miners upon agricultural lands. In answer to a question re appointment of mining surveyors, as recommended by Mr Ulrich, Mr MacKellar replied that Government would be very happy to comply with the recommendation of Mr Ulrich, hut explained the Purvey Staff was now more efficient than it was previously, and the Government were satisfied it would be nWe to undertake all the work, that Mr Ulrich had recommended the appointment of special mining surveyors under a misrepresentation. Mining Companies did not take advantage of the services of the mining surveyors to obtain surveys. If they wished to have surveys of the kind indicated by Mr Ulrich the present staff would be aide to undertake the work. Tho Treasurer brought up Financial Statement.
