MISCELLANEOUS.

—o — Have you heard my last song ? asked an incompetent composer of a critic. “ 1 sincerely hope so,” was the reply. “ Your riverence is like a mile post,” said a bold, grumbling Wicklow peasant, ‘ for you always points to a road you niver goes.’ A very good hit was made recently at an election in Scotland by one of the defeated candidates. A gentleman approached him with “ Well Mr , how do you feel 2 “ Well ” said he, “ I feel, I suppose, pretty much as Lazarus did ” “As Lazarus did, how is that 2” said the first speaker. “Why said he, “ Lazarus was licked by dogs, aud so was I.”

The cause of women is advancing in America. Six women have been elected to the Boston U.S. school committee. The town of Lynn also elected several women on their school committee, and Worcester also chose one, the interesting thing in the latter case being the fact that she ran against her husband, and beat him move than two to one.

The Dog and Panther.—A panther escaped from a cage in the country lately and as he slouched majestically down tho road monarch once more of all ho surveyed, ho was sighted hy a watch-dog who lay sunning himself before a farmer’s door ; and probably supposing him to be some village dog without any fight in him, ho sailed over the fence and made a lounge for him. There was a momentary squabble, a cloud of dust and when the keepers arrived there wasn’t enough of that dog to string .1 banjo with. Any generous man would be willing to give five pounds to know what that dog thought about half a minute after he had got hold of that panther. Tho Connecticut River Railroad Company is about introducing for trial a set of paper car wheels under the forward trucks of one of its engines. These wheels are manufactured by bringing a pressure of 350 tons on sheets of common straw paper, which is turned perfectly round and tho tub forced into a hole in the centre this requiring a pressure of 2S tons weight. The tiro is of steel, and has a one quarter inch bevel upon the inner edge, thus allowing the paper filling to be forced in, 250 tons pressure being required in the process. Two iron slates, one upon each side of tho paper, are bolted together, which prevents the possibility of the fillings coming out. The tiro rests upon the paper only, and partakes of its elasticity in consequence.—Papemakei s Journal,

The host shape for fruit-trees, "'according to the opinion of a recent 'convention of German pomologists, is the pyramidal. This form is preferred on“itho ground that it gives the minimum of shade, greatest strength, production of bettor fruit, and fewer disadvantages from storms, weight of snow, excess of, fruit, &c. A certain Bishop in the House of Lords rose to speak, and announced that ho should divide what he had to say into twelve parts, when the Duke of Wharton interrupted him, and hogged he might bo indulged for few minutes, as he had a story tell which he could only introduce at that moment. “ A drunken follow was passing by St. Paul’s at night, and heard the clock slowly chiming twelve. He counted the strokes, and when it had finished looked towards the clock and said, ‘ Hang you ! Why couldn’t you give us all that at once?’ ” There was an end of the bishop’s story.

Science and Art.—A striking instance of the immense value a small piece of steel may acquire by the great power of skilled mechanical labor, is the balance spring of a watch.
