(from cur own correspondent.
Since my last letter another miner has hecn hurt, though not in the usual manner, viz,, by a fall of earth. Robert Paisley, a miner residing at Clarke's Diggings, fell from an iron piping, stretched upon wire wonderfully escaping with a dislocated thigh. Dr Whitton was sent for, who replaced the thigh, and the patient is recovering as rapidly as can bo expected. Our Athenaeum is in a vety neglected state at present. The rooms are untidy, papers, books, and periodicals are to be seen all over the room, and everything appears to bo in a state of utter confusion. But what can be expected of the librarian when the Committee by whom ho is appointed take no interest in the Institution. They Me supposed to meet once a month, but 1 do not believe they have done so for three or four months. Copies of new papers through this diffidence are not solicited, no now books are introduced, and funds are scarce. They do not care so long as there is sufficient money to pay the Secretary and Librarian their salaries; though why the Secretary is paid more than secretaries of other institutions existing none but the Committee know. I verily believe that if the Committee found the Institution in debt they would sell a portion of the books to cover the amount. They seem to think
that it is not well enough supported, and therefore should bo allowed to die out. Now, there are so many of the inhabitants Good Templars the place will bo more than ever needed as a retreat during the winter evenings. If the Committee do not take moro interest in the - Institution it will without fail dio.
The Bank of New South Wales is just completed, and is a spacious building ; although it cannot bo rid of its stable appearance. The architect’s name is generally inscribed over the door, or in some conspicuous part of the building, hut in this instance it has been omitted. The initiation of elected officers in the Good Templar Lodge here took place on Monday evening last. Bro. Carr, specially delegated from the Grand Lodge, acted as deputy. Bro. Carr also conferred the 2nd degree on several members on Wednesday evening, sth inst. The Lodge, financially, stands well, and is weekly increasing in number. Our first instalment of winter arrived on Sunday, in the shape of a snow storm.
