(From Exchanges) Grahamstown, April 19th. Gold from the prospccto’rs trial crushing (Tairua)was assayed at the Bank of New Zealand to day, and found to be value of L2 13s 6d per ounce. Exceedingly rich stone has been struck in the Halcyon claim at Mohikinui. 20oz of loose gold were obtained from one blast of rock. The body of stone is calculated to go 15oz. to the ton. London, April I2th. Captain Boynton, with his life "saving apparatus, floated fifty miles across the channel; nightfall only prevented his reaching Boulougne. The result was telegraphed to the Queen. Melbourne, April 14th. Carroll, one of the members of the Assembly for Ararat, has been arrested for extensive forgeries. Sydney. A murder has been commited near Mudgee. A man named George Rope shot his brother’s wife The murderer was knocked down by her son, and frightful wounds inflicted on his forehead, which will probably prove fatal. The rush to the Northern Queensland diggings continues. Nearly 2000 Chinamen arrived, and 8000 more at Hong Kong are waiting transit. Great opposition is shown to Chinese immigration, and the Government have promised to bring in a bill dealing specially with the question. There is plenty gold coming in, but fever is prevalent ; and the blacks are troublesome, a number of deaths being reported.
