BLACKS.
(Communicated. ) The principle feature of news from this portion of your district is the completion of two public works. I refer to tlio bridge across Spottis Creek, for general traffic ; and the one across tho Manuherikia River, for foot passengers only. AA'hen I say they are completed 1 am correct in so far as the structures themselves are concerned, but the approaches, however, I am sorry to say are not commenced, therefore, for public purposes tboy are useless. On the subject of approaches, and the general management of roads in this district, I may have something to say in your next issue. On Tuesday night last tho celebration of the in-going of Mr Martin Gavin to the Shamrock Hotel, took place, he liaving bought out the late proprietor Mr W. Loask, who is, in future, to devote his energies to farming. The celebration was in tho form of a free feed and dance ; as nothing hut good humor prevailed, and dancing was kept up till grey dawn on the following morning, tho affair may bo set down as a perfect success. Mr Gavin is an old resilient, and deserves to be supported. The Resident Magistrate’s and AVardon’s Courts wore tho scene of great hustle the whole of tho day, and it was not till a late hour in the evening that the business was
got through. The following is a summary of tho cases :—Resident Magistrate’s Court —Atkins v. Trueadalo.—Claim, LI 17s. Settled out of Court.—Ah Cow v. Eraser.— Claim, L 3. Withdrawn.--Fitzgerald v, Niven.—Claim, LI 11s. Judgment for amount.—Niven v. Marley.— Claim, L 5 ss. Judgment for amount.—Lichfield v. Rivers. —Claim, Ll9 2s 3d, the price of a parcel of oats. Tho claim was disputed, the oats not. being according to sample. Judgment, however, was given for plaintiff for 1,17 ISs lid, being at tho rate of 4s per bushel. - Pitches and others v. M‘Endow and others. —Claim, LI2 damages. Dismissed.—AVm. Leask applied for temporary transfer of his license to Martin Gavin. Granted.— Charles AVise, Secretary of Thompson’s District School Committee, applied for permission to keep open Mellor’s New Town Hotel, on the night of the 21st inst., the occasion of a Ball in aid of the School funds. Granted. Warden’s Court.—A largo number of raining applications were entertained. Tho district—combining Drybread, Tinkers, ami Blacks—so far as regards mining, nothing much can he said on account of scarcity of water. Otherwise, things are prosperous ; the farmers, at all events, have no couse to complain with oats at 4a per bushel, and other produce at corresponding rata?.
