CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

—o — A special meeting of tho Council was held in the Council Chambers on "Wednesday evening last the 30 th ultimo : —Present, B. Naylor, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Hazlott, Beck, Welsford, Hueston, and M’Connochio. Tho Mayor stated tho object of tho meeting was to discuss tho desirability of memorialising the Government to place a sum of money on the Estimates for tho purpose of building a gaol at Clyde. He said tho present building used as a lock-up was disgraceful, and for tho purpose of confining a prisoner in, it was a perfect farce, as with little or no trouble, a man could soon get out : leaving that out, it was sheer inhumanity to confine anyone in. In tho summer time it was like like an oven, while in the winter it was as an ice house. On tho occasion of the last visit to the district of Mr Commissioner Weldon, he (the Mayor), had drawn his attention to it, and had obtained from him a promise of his support. As the Provincial Council was on the eve of sitting, the time was most propitious to act, and he thought a Memorial to his Honor the Superintendent and his Executive, praying for a suitable sum to be placed on the Estimates, together with the support of the district, the Member, and Mr. Commissioner Weldon would have tho desired effect. Cr. Hjelett endorsed the views expressed by the hSk-or ;he looked upon it that it was the duty of the Council to move in the matter, and ho was of the opinion that if the real state of the existing disgraceful sheds were represented to the Government, their prayer would be complied with. After some further conversation, a motion embodying the above was put and carried, and tho meeting broke up.
