Tbo British Ensign.— The Union Jack is a combination of tbo original flag of England—white, with a red cross—with which was incorporated on the ascension of James 1., the banner of Scotland—blue, wi l hj a white diagonal cross. This continued until the union with Ireland in 1801, when the banner of St. Patrick—white, with a red diagonal c.-oss—was added to it.
