MATAKANUI ANNUAL RACES.
—o— This annual event which came off on Thursday and Friday tho 28th and 29ch ultimo was as usual Highly successful. The attondonoe of visitors however was not so great as in former years, yet there was a greater evidence of well being amongst those present than wo remember ever to havo aeon at any public gathering in the district. On tho first day tho assemblage could not have been less than 200, whilst on tho second day there must havo been folly 250, the which, taking into consideration the sparse population of tho district was satisfactory. Of the racing, the particulars of which is to be found below, not so much can be said, yet, tak'ng into conaideration that they were all local horses, the sport was good, each event was well contested. Both days racing passed off without a hitch or question, save in the Hospital race, a protest being entered against the winner; as the question is re ferrod to the Australasion for decision, wo refrain from making any remark. Mr T. Huddleston, who bad the booth, did a / ro.aring'hnsiness, and we should imagine * was well recouped for any expense and trouble he may havo incurred. FIRST DAY.
