Some time since the Lead Mayor of London publicly laid down the dictum that if people wanted to commit assault and battery they might do so in their own private houses. Mr Ingham, the Hammersmith stipendiary, and Mr Alderman Allen have now supplemented this extraordinary advice with two very startling suggestions, the one being that when the police hear people quarrelling they should allow them to break each other’s heads, and then take them into custody, and the other that they should summarily punish persons who use offensive language in the streets by soundly thrashing them with their belts. If these suggestions areacted upon by “ our protectors,” London will soon become a pleasant place to live in.
