BENDIGO. Consequent npon the extraordinary rich yields from the Cromwell Quartz Mining Company, Bendigo, a re-action In favor of tho district has set in. Claims are being taken up, and companies being formed, and so far tho only unwelcome sound is—Why did you not put mo down for so many shares ? The fact is, the excitement both in and outside of tho district is up to fever height, and the long unsolved problem—ls Bendigo a payable field?—will, in all probability be settled this summer. The ventures «n hand are :—Tho Cromwell Quartz Mining Company, The Lucknow Co. (Kepis* tered). The Reliance Co. (Registered), The Energetic Co. (Registered), The Deep Level Co. (Registered), The Rise and Shine Co. (Unlimited), of 40 shareholders, Tho Aurora Lease (T M’Morran), the Golden Crown Claim (Messrs Logan, Wrightaon, and Daggt, and two or three other claims or leases held by Mr T, Logan. The first on the list, the Cromwell Co., are raising from their No. 1 lease, at a depth of 280 feet, some very excellent atone, 4oz to fiozto *he ton being the average, with a strong reef before them also from two other shafts at .various levels. Taking the stone at the battery, and at the various shafts, we compute the quantity of stone on grass to be about (100 tons. No. 2 lease, and the Golden Link claim adjoining the No. 1 lease, tho property of the same Company, are lying idle ; not that there is no stone, but that the crushing powerof the Company is fully occupied. We understand tbat.it is intended to place these properties before the public under the Mining Companies’ Act. - Should this be done we think we can safely say that it will be one of the few payable concerns in tho Province. Tho Reliance Co., situate on the western boundary of No. 1 lease, are sinking a second shaft, their first shaft being found, after survey, to bo off the line of reef. Tho second shaft is now down over 100 feet, through a heavy drift wash, and. not bottomed. The existence of this deposit of wash, where the s 'hist rock was thought to be, on or near the surface, is the wonder of the district, and perfectly incomprehensible. The locality' is worthy a visit from some of our learned professors, and we hope to hear of some of them paying it a visit. Mr Ulrich, fnm the "Victoria School (if Mines, we hope may be persuaded to take Bendigo in his course through the count ry 7 . The Energetic Co., to tho west of the Reliance, have not yet broke ground, they, apparently, in digging parlance, are “shepherding” the Reliance. The Lucknow Co. aro driving at a low level for the reef. In their main tunnel, which is 400 feet across the reef, only one back was struck, and along this they are now driving as yet without striking stone, but as the ground a-head is getting very wet and rather softer, though still veryhard, Mr Besanki, the manager, thinks the reef is not far distant. The Golden Crown is sinking and carrying a thin leader down. The Aurora, Deep Level Co., and the Rise and Shine are arranging preliminaries preparatory for a start. Since this was written no little stir has taken place at the south end of the Cromwell Co.’s claim. Fresh claims have been marked out to the south, and adjoining the Company’s ground ; and the Reliance has also marked out an extra six acres to tho south of the present lease. If the discovery is such as to warrant this marking out Bendigo may safely be said to have started on a new era, as in tho direction of tiie present marking there aro milc s of likely country. CARRICK. Great confidence is expressed in this district, and hopes are entertained that when the Carrick Range Water Race is completed and a full supply of water is brought on to the ground, the locality will be the richest and hold the most prosperous population of any place in the Province. Tho number of quartz reefs proved to be payable, but awaiting cheap crushing, is legion, and the same may he said of tho alluvial terraces and flats which only await water. This difficulty, however, is not long-lived, as the Carrick Water Race Company have succeeded, as previously announced by us, in bringing the supply of water to tho Young Australian mill, and the conveyance of the same from thence to the ground on tho Ban nockburn is a matter not so much of labor as of convenience. Wo have already had occasion to compliment the Directors, and to intimate more than the fact that the water has. been successfully brought in would only bo to add one poor eulogium to that which needs no fulsome flattery 7, but unmistakeably speaks for itself. The only crushing of late, we have heard of, was from the Leader Claim, which is situate nearly on the crown of tho range, the yield being 24dwts. to the ton. This is highly payable considering the great body of stone. ALEXANDRA. The prospects of this district, we are happy to say, are cor si lerably brighter than they wore at tho beginning of last year. This is produced by a variety of causes, the principle one doubtless being that the past season was an open one, giving a bounteous supply of water, tho main agent in mining, and thus enabling all the claims to bo steadily worked.
In 182-1 the number of printers in London was only 136, this year there are 777. A good story is told of Horace Gree'ey. Every one connected with the New York press knows what a delectable hand ho wrote. Having occasion to communicate with a brother e h'tor, ho wrote a note and despatched it by a messenger. His friend, not being ab’o to decipher it, returned it for further explanation ; upon receipt of which Horace, supposing it to be a rep'y to his own communication, looked it over and tried to read it, and not being able to fathom its contents, turned pertuleutly to the imp, and said, “ What docs the damned fool mean, take it back again, 1 cannot make it out." “ Please, sir,” retorted the messenger, “that’s just what he says." • A Memphis paper defines advertising to bo a " blister which draws trade.”
Goldsmiths’ Work. Tho process of fine-art manufacture in this brancli of trade is strikingly exemplified in a little work published by Mr. J. W. Benson, of No. 25, Old Bond-street, and of the City Steam factory, 58 and 60 Ludgate-hill, London. It is enriched and embellished with designs, by Italian, French and English artistes, of brooches, bracelets, ear-rings, and other articles, suitable for personal wear, or for wedding, birth-day, or other presents,' with their prices. Mr. Benson, who holds the appointment to H.R.H. the Princo of Wales, has also published a very interesting pamphlet on the Rise and Progress of Watchmaking. These pamphlets are sent, post free, for two stamps each, and they cannot to too strongly recommended to those contevnplaing a purchase, especially to residents in the country or abroad, who are thus enabled to select any article the y may require, and have forwarded in perfect safety.
