CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday the 18th instant at 8 p.m. Present, B. Naylor, Esq., in the Chair, and Councillors Hazlett, Hueston, Cox, and Bock.
Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence, including the following, was read and received. From Messrs Grindley, and G. Facho, accepting the office of Assessors.
From the Arrow Town Council, accompanied by the following resolution “That being of opinion that payable quartz reefs exist in the mountain ranges of Otago, and feeling that no sufficient inducement has hitherto been offered to miners for tho discovery of tho same; this Council is of opinion that, with a view to encourage such discoveries, the Government should bo requested to offer a bonus, cither in money or land, to any successful prospector finding a new and payable reef.” From the Provincial Engineer, to the effect that tho Plans for the bridge were being proceeded with as fast as the worlt in tho office would allow. Tho outward correspondence was read and adopted.
In consideration of latter and resolution from the Arrow Town Council, Councillor Beck said ho could not hut think the Municipal Councils in interfering with goldfield matters, wore stepping beyond their functions, and considered that the asking of the Government to offer a bonus for prospecting for quartz reefs, was more within the sphere of Mining Associations. Councillor Hazlett agreed with Councillor Beck, and further thought that the present time was not opportune to deal with the question as nothing could possibly be done till the Provincial Council mot. It wa* ordered that the letter lie on the table for further consideration. The assessment for the year 1874-5 was now laid on the table. The Mayor said the total amount was W. 113 10s., being nearly LKM) in excess of the previous year’s. Resolved, -That the assessment be allowed. The Town Clerk was instructed to give the proper notices of allowance.
The Mayor and Councillor Hueaton, the sub committee appointed at the last meeting to confer with Mr Beck, and to make such an allowance they might deem just for repairs eiTerted by him during his tenancy of the Corporation stables, reported that they had allowed L 5, and would recommend that in future it be an understanding that for any further repairs cr improvement the tenant be alone responsible. The report was approved. The 15th of February was fixed upon as the date on which the contractor for the new Library Hall, hand over the building completed. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to tho Inspector of Nuisances, and point out to him the pool of stagnant water at the rear of East Ward, with the request that ho order the same to be filled up, and the nuisance abated ; also, to write to the Scavenger on the state of channels in Sunder-laud-street.
The accounts not having been passed by tho Finance Committee were ordered to stand over till next meeting. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the meeting.
