Explanation. —ln the report of the proceedings of the E. M. Court, Cromwell, of 4th instant, and published in our issue of the 11th instant, through the misplacement of the letter “t ” for “hj ” tho name of “ Starkey ” appeared by error as defendant in a small debt case instead of “ Sharkey.” We regret the error as Mr Starkey Ims fallen into the idea that the mistake was intended, and was a pie.ee of spleen either on our part or that of our correspondent. So far as our correspondent is concerned, he must he held guiltless as on reference to his manuscript, we find the word “Sharkey" written particularly plain and intelligible, and as to ourselves, we have no occasion to treat Mr Starkey othar than as a good constituent, and again express our regret that a typographical error should have been so misconstrued.

A practical miner informs ns (Times) of a simple method of purifying quicksilver from adulterations or minera’s with which it may through long use have become impregnated. Having a quantity of silver on hand, which had proved sluggish and did not acton the plates, onr informant states that he placed a small quantity of it in a vessel, for the purpose of treating it in the ordinary way, by means •of chemicals. Having first treated the silver with nitric acid and warm water, he proceeded to wash it with boiling water, in which a small quantity of salt had been placed, and was astonished to find the metallic fluid becoming quite lively, throwing up the impurities aud all foreign matter to the top in a kind of a scum. On being informed that salt had been mixed with the hot water used, as it had been intended for culinary purposes, he made another experiment with boiling water, free | from any saline mixture, and not until a small pinch of salt had been added, did the silver become lively and commence to throw up a scum. Since that time onr informant states be has used nothing but salt to clean his quicksilver, of course treating it with nitric acid in the first instance, and he has invariably found this simple and inexpensive plan to answer the purpose.
