MR. HALLENSTEIN’S NEW PREMISES, CROMWELL.
—o— The new warehouse and dwelling about to ho erected for Messrs I. Wallenstein and Co., will be the most costly, and probably beat and substantial building in the district ; in fact, a better cannot be found outside of Dunedin. We have been favored with a view of the plan of the building, which is to be two stories high, built of stone, with concrete partition walls. The front elevation is 25ft., by a width of 33ft., with a frontage to Melmore Terrace of 55ft. Gin. Entering from the street through folding glass doors admission is gained to the store, which is 33ft. Gin. x 30ft. Th e windows tor the front of store will be of plate glass Bft. x Bft. Leaving the store you pass into the hall, which is 6ft. 3in., and then ascend a flight of stairs to the show room, measuring 21 ft. Gin. x 30ft. Returning thence and entering by hall door (3ft. 9in.), with fanlights, you are ushered into the hall; on the right-band side of which is the'dining room, of 12ft. x 15ft. Gin. Adjoining the dining room is the kithen, which measures 12ft. x 14ft., and pantry. On the second floor there is a drawing room, immediately over the dining room, and of the same dimensions ; and opposite to which is a bedroom 15ft. by lift. Proceeding into the lobby there is another bedroom on the right (12ft. x 14ft.) Adjoining these rooms are private closets. The staircase window—of stained glass—is to be Sft. high, with circular top, made in one sash, having margins all round. The mantlcpiccea in the dining and drawing rooms are to have carved trusses ; the kitchen one is to be plain, with brackets underneath. There will be only one chimney visible from outside, although there will be four fireplaces. It is intended that the present place of business shall be used only as a storeroom. The contractors are Messrs Drummy and Heron, of Cromwell, and the price is L 1492 16s, exclusive of the fittings for the shop. Their well-known reputation as builders need no comment. Mr F. W. Burwell, of Queenstown, is the architect. When finished this building will be an ornament to Cromwell, and considerably enhance the value of property in Melmore Terrace.
