CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

i The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening last the 20th instant. Present, B. Naylor, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Hasdett, Beck, Cox, Welsford. M'Connoehie and Hueston. The minute of previous meeting were ami '•onfirmad. The inward correspondence, consisting of the following letters were read and received. From Mr A. Christophers, tendering his resignation as auditor. Mr T. L. Shepherd, M.L.A., relative to Railway memorial. Town Clerk of Invercargill relative to Borrowing powers. Colonial Secretary, re-election of Mayor. Town Clerk of Oamaru, re Revenue Ufficer.

Town Clerk of the Thames, ro Revenue received.

Mr M‘Nally, applying for water of the Wai Keri Keri Valley. The outward correspondence as follows was read and adopted. ToT. L. Shepherd, Esq., M.L.A., re Immigration barracks. Mr Alves, re Plans of Library building. Mr J. Holt, re Culvert in the main street.

Mr J. I). Feraud, re Via Puna Water Race.

Resolved—“ That the resignation of Mr Christophers be accepted, and that the thanks of this Council ho accorded him. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply to letters received from Town Clerks of Invercargill, Thames, and Oamaru. The letter of Mr M Nally was referred to the Public Works Committee.

The Town Clerk laid on the table plans of survey of Wia Puna Water-races, and other papers relative to the Water W. rks, and he was instructed to write to the Provincial Secretary, conveying the thanks of the Council to the Government, f.. r assistance in the matter.

llesolved—“TLat the sum of eighteen guineas be paid to the Provincial Government, for charges of survey of water-race. The question of building the bridge across the Molyncux was brought forward, and after discussion it was resolved—

“ That the Mayor and Cr llazlet t be appointed a deputation to wait on the Government to arrange terms ; also to arrange to raise the necessary money. Cr M'Counochie was elected a member of the Finance Committee. Accounts, amounting to Ll‘2 15s Gd, were passed for payment. Proposed by Cr Welsford, seconded by Cr Hucston—“That the Council contract immediately for curbing and channelling six chains, more or less, at the comers of Sunderland, Cheviot, and Coquette streets.”

As an amendment Cr Hazlett proposed, and Cr Beck seconded—“ That the question of curbing and channelling he deferred till arrangements arc completed for the Water Works and the building of the Bridge.” The amendment was carried. The meeting then dissolved with the customary vote to the chair.

An Unsatisfactory Meal. A domestic broil.

ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL, —o— The ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Friday last the 21st instant, there being present Mr James Samson, the Mayor, in the chair, and Councillors 15eresford, Rivers, Finlay, ami Theyers. The minutes of the last three meetings were read and confirmed. An application from Mr Martin for permission to lay pipes across the footpath was granted. The deputation appointed to ascertain from the lessees of the town water-race, if two heads of water could be given to the Flour Mill Company, gave in their report to the effect that no water could be taken from the race at Chatto Creek. Moved by Councillor Finlay seconded by Councillor Beresford and cauied—That the report from the deputation be adopted, and the Town Clerk reply to the directors of the Flour Mill Company informing them that the Council are not able to comply with the application for two heads of water at Chatto Creek.

Moved by Councillor Theyers, seconde 1 by Councillor Beresford and carried—That a deputation of the Council wait upon the lessees of the race to ascertain if a supply of water can be given at Brennan’s Gully to the Flour Mill, and if the decision is in the affirmative, the Council to offer every inducement to the directors of the Company to erect the mill at that place.

A letter was read from the Provincial Government asking the Government to contribute towards the maintenance of a Revenue Officer far the Province.

Moved by Councillor Finlay, seconded by Councillor Rivers and carried—That the town Clerk reply to the letter, stating that this Council, although sympathising with the object in view, arc of opinion that the expenses of such an officer should be borne by the Government. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply to a letter received from the Thames Town Council informing them that this Council are already receiving the local revenues mentioned, under the Otago Local Revenue’s Ordinance, 1873.

Councillors Rivers and Theyers were elected the Works’ Committee, and Councillors Beresford and Finlay, Finance Committee.

Moved by Councillor Finlay, seconded by Councillor Theyers and carried -That the Council meet every Wednesday fortnight, and the next meeting be held on the 2nd of September.

The Council had an interview with the lessees of the race on the 22nd August to ascertain on what terms they would allow two heads of water to be used at Brennan’s Gully. Mr Terry stated on behalf of the Company that they would give two heads of water at the rate of LI per week. A meeting of the Council took place immediately after the interview, to take into consideration what oiler they could make to the Flour Mill Company. Proposed by Councillor llivers, seconded by Councillor Finlay and carried—That the Council offer forty inches of water at Brennan’s Gully to the Flour Mill .Company the said water to he returned into the race again, for the term of twenty years, at a nominal rental of one shilling per week.
