CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
—o - A meeting of the 'Town Council was Held on the Cth instant.
Present: The Mayor, and Councillois Fazlett, Hucston, and Cox. Tho Mayor said : This being the first meeting, and he having been again elected Mayor, had great pleasure in meeting the Council, and could assure them that he would do-all in his power, during the year, to advance the interests of the citizens ; and would congratulate the new Council-
lors who had just taken their seats. He felt satisfiec that all would work in harmony for the general benefit pf the town. This would be an important year, inasmuch as there were several large worSs iu the course of being (barred out tho waterworks, bridge, and other works of minor importance. During the past year these had been initiated and all the preliminary steps had b«-en taken. There liad been difficulties in the way, but all these had been overcome. It now remained for the Council to carry them on to completion. This would entail a considerable amount of work, but he (the Mayor) assured they would do their utmost trt attain that cud by working energetically during the year. MiNuTes. The minutes of tho last meeting were read tiiid confirmed. CORRESrO N'DENC E. Inwards.—From tho Provincial Secretary, stating that his Honor the Deputy Superintendent would proclaim Parts 12, 13,' 17, 18, 19, 20, and 22 of the Mun-cipal Corporations Act, 1872, to extend and apply to Clyde ; from the Gold-fields Secretary, in reference to tho Water-works survey ; from Mr R. Poole, resigning the office of Town Clerk and Rato Collector • The resignation of Mr R. Poole was accepted. SALARIES. The following salaries and fees wefo fixed for tha year :—Town Clerk and Collector, 507, and ten per cent, on tho dog and goat tax ; Valuators, two guineas each : Auditors, one guincajeach for each audit. COMMITTEES. The following Committees were then appointed ; Finance—Councillors Hazlett, Hucston. and Clark ; Public Works - Councillors Cox, Beck, Weis ford. HOUR OE MEETING. It was resolved, That in future the time of meeting should be half-paSt seven, irstead of seven o’clock, The usual monthly meeting of tho Town Council was hold on Wednesday last, at 8 p.m. Present : B. Naylor, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Hazlett, Bock, Welsfefd, and Hueston. MINUTES. The minutes o p tho previous meeting were
road and confirmed. CORRESPOXHEXCE. The ontward correspondence, consisting of a letter to his Honor the Superintendent, relative to the establishment of an immigrants’ barracks at Clyde, was read and approved. The inward correspondence, consisting of a letter from Mr J. I). Feraud, embodying an offer of 121. per annum for the use of the Wiafuna water for domestic purposes, was read and received. In considering Mr Feraud’s letter Councillor Iluoston saiil ho did not see that the offer could be entertained, as at the last mooting of the Council it was resolved that none of the Corporation water-rights should be let for other than gold-mining purposes. He would oppose the application until the water was brought under the Watcr-woaks Act.
Cr Hnzlclt agreed with Or Hurston, hut regretted that something could not be done to supply Mr Feraud with water. After some further discussion, it was resoared, That the Town Clerk inform Mr Feraud that that the Council is not in a position at present to entertain his offer. TOWS CLERK. The application of Mr George Clark f> r the office of Town Clerk and Collector, being the only one sent in, was read and received. Resolved, That Mr George Clark he appointed Town Clerk and Collector. FINANCES. The standing orders were suspended, and Council resolved itself into a Finance Committee, and passed accounts for payment, amounting to G I. 12s. 41. PUBLIC WORKS On the resumption of business, Cr IVclsford proposed—That tenders bo called for improving Hw main road to Alexandra. The unanimous opinion of the Ctmnril was that the work was neccss.vy, hut that it would be difficult to define the work sufficiently to obtain tenders. It was, after some discussion, decided to get the work done by day labor. RLATTC.nTERTNO LICENCES. Cr ITazlett asked when the next slaghtering licenses were duo, and said he dcsir d to enter his protest agamst Hie issuing of any nro¥c sueh licenses for slaughtering in the town, SANITARY. A lengthened discussion ensued on the sanitary state of the town.
rrsur iibrary. Cr Hucston asked what stops wore being taken in the matter of the proposed new library building. The Town Clerk explained that the pla I and specifications had been forwarded to Mr Alves, the contractor, who, tip to this, had failed to return them. Resolved : That the Town Clerk write to Mr Alves requesting him to return the plans at once. The Mayor said, as there was not a full Council present, ho did not think it advisable to deal wdth the Bridge. He also said, that the savvey of the race had not yet been made. Resolved > That the Council in future meet fortnightly.
