BeneaththeßuleofMenEKTißELY just the pen' is mightier than thes word.
The time is fast approaching when we shall he called upon to record our votes in favor of aspirants for Civic honors, but as yet. no names are mentioned even for the seat of honor to he occupied by the Mayor. We scarcely expected to see such apathy, as the coming year promises to be not the least important in the career of Clyde as a Corporate Town, but withal, we do not know whether the current of thought on the subject though quiet and calm, is not doing its work equally as well, if not better than if it. were noisy and turbulent. Coming events cast their shadow before them, and may be, the responsibilities that will fall on the shoulders of the occupant for next year is the cause. We have no desire to intimidate the timid, but for the coming year is wanted a gentleman, not only possessed of good business tact, but one that will not allow himself to be turned from a purpose without good and strong argument. The works on the tapis—works that must ho carried out, if the credit and standing of the Town arc to be maintained—are the con. Structingof permanent Water-works, and the building of a bridge across the Mi lyneux. The Corporation, that is, the May a’ and Council will have to carry out these works, and we hold and contend that without such a head as we have described, trouble, loss, and confusion will retult, and the works which many of the citizens have set their hearts upon will be indefinitely postponed. The sinews of war for these works are provided by an Ordinance passed during the last Session of the Pro vincial Council, the only thing wanting is a steady head to properly ap. ply them. There are other things to he considered in the election of a Maj or, the least not being perhaps, that the Mayor by virtue of his position is, not only Chief Magistrate of the Town, but is the acknowledged representative, on whom devolves many duties requiring more than ordinary business tact and ability. In conclusion we hope that no private or personal motives will be allowed to interfere with the selection, and on the twenty-first of July, the day of election, all will be satisfied ” the right man is in the right place.”
The utmost dissatisfaction has been expressed at tbe way in which the Citizens’ Roll for the Town of Clyde has been dealt with this only those parties who have paid their rates being enumerated. It is true the course adopted is stricty in accordance with Municipal Laws, but we question very much the wisdom of it, as for instance, why should those parties who were unavoidably absent from the town from before the time the notice"was given of the rates being due, until after the time for paying ,the same had expired, be debased the rights of citizenship. It is all very well to say that no great harm is done, as all desirous of having their names enrolled can take advantage of the Revision r 'ourt ; wo hold that great harm has been done, and a bitterness of feeling engendered that will take some time to allay. The Corporation of Clyde has now been in existence seven years, and this is the first time the Municipal Laws in this respect has been acted upon, the course hitherto adopted has been to debar all persons from voting who have not p-aidj their rates, and we think it a very great pity there should have been any deviation from the rule this year. It is an established piit.ciple that when no person is injured by tbe ignoring of a law, such a law is allowed, as it were, by mutual consent to sink into oblivion. With the laws affecting Municipal Institutions we think the maxim might with benefit to all, he acted on.
